Re: Question to musicians about 'Cochise'

Just got home, about to fly high as a kite, and threw on the Audioslave record(shocked? 16 ). Anyways, listening to Cochise and I have a question for the guitarists here. You guys all know I am not a musician and know fuck all about how this stuff is created.

Anyways, Morello does something at the beginning of the track that just sounds killer. What is he doing to achieve that sound? Is it something simple that most guitarists can do but rarely do it, or is this like a Buckethead thing where its a technique that's difficult for the average musician to replicate?

Here's the song....

I saw an interview where Morello talked about the beginning of the song. He said he always fucks around with his guitar to make weird sounds for fun.  And one day he loosened up the strings a little and started pounding on the strings really hard right at the base and to him it sounded like helicopters.  Everyone else in the band liked it so they used it as the intro to Cochise and the record.

It's one of those obscure off the wall type things.

I always thought it was an intriguing creepy intro, because the build up for it sounds like a horror film. Like Leatherface is about to come around the corner... and then it just kicks into straight forward rock.

Yeah i think it's just detuned strings, being smacked against the pickups and running through some kind of overdrive or other effect pedal. Don't think it's really hard to do...just an unusual sound....but it definately works well in that song.

Here's a clip where you can see it done live.
