Re: Slash on tour
Tommy and Bumble look just fine.
But you can hardly call them iconic. In fact, for most casual fans you can probably exchange any one of them in the band and no-one would notice (which is a shame, 'cause they're both more than talented enough).
Slash is a true icon, in part due to his distinctive look. Angus Young still dresses like he did in their heyday, and it sure looks silly but it's still cool 'cause he is who he is. It would make no business sense for him not to wear the top hat in public, and I'm sure you also realize he doesn't wear those types of clothes in his day-to-day life.
Re: Slash on tour
It has nothing to do with being iconic. He just looks fucking stupid doing an interview with a tophat on. I have no problem with it on stage every now and then. His other attire is fine on and off stage. But, when you sit there in an interview with a tophat and sunglasses on, you look silly.

He did do without it a couple of years after the first snakepit album. People were literally complaining about it then (same thing as the "bring back the bandanna" chants Axl had to live with), so I guess this is a classic case of "you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't"... I agree, it looks silly, but there's probably more than enough people that like it to warrant his choice.
Re: Slash on tour
Madagas makes a fair point though. It's one thing to wear the top hat while performing live. But does he really need to wear it during interviews and such? And for the record, I've seen him interviewed without it, so I can't say he wears it out in public 100% of the time.

The top hat is as important to Slash's current image as Buckethead's bucket.

Re: Slash on tour
I think the top hat is more predominant these days due to what some others have said here, Slash's hair is thinning out. I remember some photos posted of Slash a few years ago, and his hair was quite thin on top, so if a Top Hat helps hide that and keep him looking like the cool rocker we all know, good luck to him!
