London, Jan 5 : Britney Spears' much-publicised meltdown that landed the singer in hospital can be attributed to a deadly combination of narcotics, including a drug designed to make racehorses leaner.

According to reports, in addition to the horse drug, the 'Toxic' singer is heavily dependent on "recreational" substances such as crystal meth, speed and ecstasy, all of which are taken with huge quantities of vodka. pears is currently being held for mental evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, following police and paramedical intervention in her house on Jan 3.

The singer had a face-off with police at her home after refusing to turn over her sons to ex-hubby Kevin Federline's bodyguard, following which cops and medics strapped her to a gurney and took her, by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai, where she will be held for 72 hours to for mental evaluation.

Sources close to the Toxic star said fears had been growing over her drug habits and she was clearly "on the edge".

When her career collapsed, Britney began taking clenbuterol, known as clen, believing it would help her lose weight and tone her body.

"Clen is a drug originally created for racehorses which helps them breathe. It makes them lean and muscular and has the same effect in humans. It works much better if you eat loads of junk - so it seemed perfect for Britney," The Sun quoted a source, as saying.

"The drug has played a big part in her meltdown this year. She started taking it after her marriage fell apart so she could get herself back into the same shape she was in before she had her kids. The side effects are horrific if you binge on clen. It makes you behave hysterically and act like a maniac.

"If you take it for more than six weeks it can be harmful too - and she has been doing just that," the source added.

One of the officers from the Los Angeles Police Department said that Spears was "believed to be under the influence of some kind of drug."

Another source revealed that Spears had lost a lot of weight recently because of mental anguish and her drug habits.

"She is on the edge. The custody battle with Kevin and the constant attention on her life is too much for her to bear. She was hysterical when police arrived and said she just wanted to keep the kids for the night," the source said.

Following the singer's hysterical antics, a Los Angeles judge has awarded the "sole legal custody and sole physical custody" of Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, to Spears' Federline, until another hearing on January 14.

Now that there's concrete proof she is a drug addict, she will most likely not get within a light year of custody of those kids for a very long time.

I don't know if this is true or not because I have not seen it pop up on the news sites yet, but apparently Dr. Phil rescued her from the hospital??

Talk about an attention whore helping an attention whore. He'll give her a 15 minute pep talk and then be shocked her problems didn't instantly evaporate.

This situation just continues to spiral out of control.

Yeah he was there. His presence not as dramatic as first thought, but he did show up.

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 5) - Britney Spears has apparently checked herself out of the hospital less than 48 hours after a bizarre standoff that brought police to her house and led a judge to award ex-husband Kevin Federline custody of their two sons.

PEOPLE reports that Spears got a visit from TV's Dr. Phil McGraw at Cedars Sinai Medical Center hospital. Shortly before his visit, Spears demanded and was granted her release. McGraw then escorted Spears to her car via an underground tunnel.

"My meeting with Britney and some of her family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention. She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her," McGraw told ET Onilne.

On Friday, court commissioner Scott Gordon gave Federline sole physical and legal custody of Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, and suspended Spears' visitation rights.

Spears, 26, was hauled away from her home by paramedics Thursday after police had to intervene when she refused to return the children to Federline after a court-monitored visit.

Gordon ordered another hearing to be held Jan. 14.

Federline had previously been awarded temporary custody of the boys because the pop singer has defied court orders, resulting in limitations on her visitation.

"I'm not happy about any of these events," Federline attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said when he left the closed-door emergency hearing Friday afternoon. "There's no winners here."

Kaplan said he went to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after Spears was admitted, but he declined to provide any details about the pop star, her ex-husband or their sons.

Hospital spokeswoman Simi Singer would not confirm or deny reports in entertainment media that Spears would be held for 72 hours for psychological evaluation. The reports did not identify their sources.

The drama began Thursday night when officers were called to her home to help resolve a dispute over her refusal to turn the children over to Federline as dictated by their custody agreement.

It took two to three hours to resolve the conflict, Los Angeles police officer Ana Aguirre said.

Early police reports said officers thought Spears might have been under the influence of some substance, but Aguirre said there was no evidence of that.

"Our understanding is that was not the case," she said.

Officers at the scene determined that paramedics "needed to be called" but it was unclear why, she said.

"We're not aware of any type of injuries that she sustained" and she was not combative with authorities, Aguirre said.

Spears was not arrested in connection with the custody dispute, she said.

"There was no actual crime that was involved," Aguirre said.

Spears and Federline married in October 2004. Her life has spiraled downward since their divorce in July. She has been photographed without underwear and appeared to be drunk and out-of-control in public. She shaved her head, beat a car with an umbrella and spent a month in rehab.

She had hoped to regain her pop crown with a much-hyped performance at MTV's Video Music Awards in September, but it was universally panned by fans and critics.

Still, Spears latest album, "Blackout," earned positive reviews when it was released in October and brought Spears her first No. 1 hit in years, "Gimme More."

Fucking amazing. The world is once again enabling the situation. She could have been held up to 3 days without her consent, but the second Britney demands to be let go, she gets to go home.

Any other woman who pulled that stunt on a dope binge would not have been released so quickly.

Britney: I wanna go home!! I wanna be an attention whore and top this latest episode!!

Hands up I've taken clenbuterol. It isn't that bigger deal, but obviously everything in big doses can cause problems, even food.

Crystal Meth Speed and Vodka can't be too safe though.

Looks like Phil wasn't being so truthful

MZ has learned Dr. Phil's visit with Britney Spears was not exactly as advertised.

People on the 7th floor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center say the doctor arrived about 7:30 AM Saturday. We're told Britney did not invite him in; she didn't even know he was coming. Sources say it was Brit's parents who told Dr. Phil to go to the hospital. When he walked into her room, we're told, a blindsided Britney walked out -- and eventually came back.

Sources say Phil tried speaking with Spears for about 15 minutes -- not an hour as Dr. Phil's press release states -- but she wanted none of it. We're told Phil was doing almost all the talking. As for walking with her to the car on her way out -- again, as his release states -- we're told if he was walking behind her, that's news to her. She absolutely was not accompanied by him.

Sources say Dr. Phil somehow convinced Brit's mom and dad to be on his show, which will tape Monday and air Tuesday (it was just moved up a day), but as one person put it, "Based on the interaction between Dr. Phil and Britney this morning, it'll be a cold day in hell before Britney goes on his show." We're told she absolutely will not appear on the program.

Sources say Dr. Phil wants to do a television intervention, something that isn't sitting well with some of the people who have known for a while that Britney has a very serious mental condition -- likely a bipolar disorder that is now in the red zone.

TMZ contacted Cedars to find out why the hospital let a television doctor on a floor that has such fragile patients, particularly since Britney had no idea he was coming. It's especially troublesome that Cedars let Dr. Phil go uninvited to Britney's room, since she had already been discharged and presumably had a right to know if someone wanted to visit. A Cedars rep made it short and sweet, telling us, "No comment."

A rep from the "Dr. Phil" show had no comment as well, other than "Dr. Phil met with Ms. Spears at family members' invitation."

This is what kills me, if this really was at a family members request, it's her mother or her parents still trying to keep her in the spot light by calling Dr. Phil when they could have called a private psychologist.

Unbelievable and I believe that she didn't want anything to do with it, that's her pattern all along as far as anyone trying to help her anyway.

Edit*  It was her dad who called Dr. Phil.   Unbelievable.
