I don't like to rag on Josh Freese, because he's an awesome drummer, but does anyone else feel underwhelmed by his drumming on the songs we've heard so far?

It might as well have been a drum machine, because there's no feel or groove to the tracks, at least from what I'm hearing. I was expecting a powerhouse more along the lines of what Dave Grohl brought to Watch This, but Josh sounds really bland on his songs.

Re: The drumming on "Slash"

Josh is one of my favorite drummers, but you can really tell when he cares versus when he doesn't. When I talked to him on the phone a year ago, I asked him a lot about the studio gigs he does for acts he doesn't care for. He said he's only heard about half of the recordings he's on, and only listens to maybe a quarter of them. And when I asked about working with Slash, he gave me a "yeah it's a good paying gig and it's just a straight rock/pop thing" and also said "I wouldn't go tour on a group like that."

I haven't heard any of the songs, and I'm not going to (just because my internet at school is frustratingly slow) until the physical record is in my hands, but if it sounds uninspired, it's probably because it was. I'll judge for myself then, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it's all vanilla.

Re: The drumming on "Slash"

when someone is getting paid for a job (even studio musicians) they should do the best they can, it doesn't matter if they like the gig or not, it's their fucking job, I haven't heard of the songs yet, but I bet it's better than some of the shit that people call music these days.

Well Josh is a professional and I'm sure he's not dogging it, but he might just not be creatively invested in the project. He probably just did what they told him to do and if it was good enough for Slash, then it was good enough for him. Again, I haven't heard it yet.

I have only heard 4 full songs (By The Sword, Ghost, Beautiful Dangerous, Starlight), all of them only once, except the first single. I have to agree that the drumming and the bass playing just lacks the feel. It's only uninspired 'professional' session playing. My computer set isn't good, the bass can be hardly heard, but I expected more. Slash shines, the songs are great, but the drumming is as shitty as on Chinese Democracy. Maybe Slash shouldn't have chosen the same player. I also don't understand why he didn't set up a band to record AND tour.

I agree in part but I do think being this is very much Slash's showpiece, the rhythm section is bound to play a little within themselves. The producer did comment that he wanted simple arrangements to let Slash's subtleties come to the fore and I think thi is perhaps what we are hearing.

Freese and Chaney are a dream rhythm section on paper and I think overall they'll do a rock solid job
