Re: 'Alice' takes in $116.3 million in the US
I'm just glad to see Tim Burton getting some respect (again) for a change. Always loved that guy, and Batman '89 & Returns, especially Returns, are some of my favorite films ever made.
Getting respect for the wrong reasons though. He's a shell of his former self at this point. Too commercialized IMHO.

So has Johnny Depp, but the beat goes on. Burton knows he's got to tone it down at this point, otherwise he's gonna have to role out Edward Scissorhands 2.
At least Depp's commercialized work was fresh when it came out. Captain Jack was an awesome character. Depp also plays a pretty wide variety of roles, although his Mad Hatter work in Alice is just a lazy ripoff of Captain Jack. There is nothing fresh about Burton's Wonderland at all. The guy has had the same schtick going for a long time and now Hollywood views him as a "safe" choice for so-called quirky visuals that aren't quirky enough to scare the average kid. And now there is news that Burton is going to be doing a stop-motion animated version of the Addams Family.

I didn't really liked it. I was excited for it but...... I wasn't overly impressed by it. Visiually it was ok but I didn't like Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter at all and I hated the story which is basically a sequel to the original. Lame. It had none of the wonder of the original story. Alice went through Wonderland as if nothing suprised her. I'd give it a 5/10 It's definately not a positive "reboot" of a timeless classic. the sad part now though is an entire new generation of kids will think this is the story of Alice in Wonderland when it's so not.
Like you said Stacey in the "most recent movie" thread they should've made two movies. remake the original one first and then do this one as a follow up but with some tweaks and new things. All they did was use the same old stuff from the original and through it into a weaker story. I mena this was marketed as and titled "ALICE IN WONDERLAND" yet she seems so unimpressed by any of it. Almost as if she's Alice in Standardland.
This movie might've been good had it nothing to live up to but it did so in my opinion it failed and it's gonna conitune to fail for an entire new generation of kids who's parents will show them this movie first ripping them of from experiencing the true Alice in WONDERLAND.
I saw this last week and thought it was a big pile of shit. I agree with your point that they should have done a straight remake with the story. There haven't been that many versions of the film made; so its not like they're remaking something that came out recently.
It's kinda disappointing that they left out the psychedelic/ counterculture stuff from the story. But I guess that's to be expected since it's a disney film.
I just didn't think that the film was that interesting as just a movie to pass the time. It was extremely predictable.
