This is now on my list of anticipated releases this year. A more rocking sound means guitarist Peter Buck must have threatened to quit if they didn't do something that kicked ass. He got tired of that sappy shit and threatened to leave if they didn't do something a bit more heavy, and that is what led to the album Monster.

It's also pretty neat that they had enough confidence in their material to try almost all of it out live to see what the reaction would be and what they might be able to do better. That is how to tour without an album release when you're actually working on the album.
Anything R.E.M. related that sounds like Monster has the potential to kick ass. When I saw them on the Monster tour, they played a lot of the classics with the Monster vibe to it and they sounded great.

I mentioned this in another thread but the last song of theirs that I truly loved was a single called "Imitation Of Life". The video was incredible.
I loved the video. I think it was 11 seconds long.
