Re: Best of these lead singles from 1991?
Other than some country, rap, and pop tarts, these are the monster lead singles from what was definitely one of THE greatest years in music.
From a quality standpoint, I would choose Jesus Christ Pose without hesitation. It destroys the entire list, but from an impact standpoint, it didn't really do anything other than get press for its controversial video at the time which was banned from MTV. You had to pay a dollar to see it on one of those pay video channels.
I would rate YCBM next on the list. It had a huge impact as millions were waiting for a new song. The tie in with T2 made it even bigger. I remember when this was played the first time on the radio I went and got a blank cassette, requested it on radio, and sat there next to the record button and pushed it the second I heard those drums kick in. Then I wore out that cassette immediately. By the time the single went on sale, while I ran to the record store to buy it, I was already sick of the song.

Wow, that's a hard choice, so MANY great songs there. We really were spoiled for new music that year. That list is killer.
I'll have to have a think about this one...
Re: Best of these lead singles from 1991?
I went with Sandman, just a monster of a song. Made a bigfoot-like footprint impression into the current rock world.
Funny you posted this, just yesterday a local radio station had a "Top 10 at 6" or something type promo, where they play a theme of songs in a row. The theme was songs from 1991, and I thought about what a great year tha twas for music. I always thought 93 & 95 were better, myb they were, but I always viewed 91 as the year promise was cracking thru. But in listening to the songs (YCBM, Metallica, RHCP, Poundcake, Ozzy's Mama I'm coming home!) I realized 91 was the year music was really big> Most was released in the latter half though, that was the year I graduated from high school so the first half blew, but the second half kicked ass. It's wierd how I associate it differently, split right down the middle actually. By December SLTS was really taking off, nearly making Nirvana a household name, but I think they really exploded in January 92. Still, I was going to start a thread about the 1991, the year in music.
You could probably put "Give it Away Now" on, RCHP lead off BSSM.
Re: Best of these lead singles from 1991?
I went with "Enter Sandman" I remember that song getting played at my middle school dances back in the day. Nowadays, these sissy kids are listening to "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus at their middle school dances. Although I shouldn't talk, we were line dancing to her father's "Achy Breaky Heart". God, I feel old now.
Anyway, "You Could Be Mine" would be a close second for me. I also remember the cool kids blaring that from the back of the school bus. Partly what got me into GNR in the first place.

Re: Best of these lead singles from 1991?
This is harder than I thought. Enter Sandman, while being a great song, was considered as Metallica's turning point, or "selling out", while You Could Be Mine was GN'R's triumphant return. The Fly was U2 re-inventing themselves after a successful run in the 80's, and they did it well.
Then, you had newcomers like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, who shook up the rock scene after the 80's was getting quite stale. Jesus Christ Pose was another great track, but I don't think it's the best of the batch.
Ozzy, Alice and Skid Row put out great efforts with their singles as well, but I wouldn't say they're the best either.
I think though, that my pick would have to be Enter Sandman. That song kept heavy rock alive and kicking into the 90's when other genres were breaking through. And it's still a staple on rock radio today as well.

Oh and I remember taping YCBM off the radio onto cassette too. I even tried to work out the lyrics too, but failed miserably... hahaha

And as for Poundcake, I've got a new found love for that song. Recently I busted out VH's F.U.C.K. album again, and have been blasting it for the last week or so.

Whoa, that's an amazing list.
I voted for Ozzy... No More Tears. Ozzy's best, absolutely.
Here's my top-tier rank...
1) Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears
2) Guns N' Roses - You Could Be Mine
3) Metallica - Enter Sandman
4) Michael Jackson - Black or White
5) Pearl Jam - Alive
That's the Top-5 on that list imo...
