Re: Your Favorite Bands-with a twist
I debated that as I love Meddle too....it came out in 71 I believe. Changed my Floyd to 71.:mosh:
as for Skynrd...yeah, they rocked. Those 3 guitars weren't just for show!

Nirvana 89-93
Pearl Jam - 91-95
Sebadoh - 92-96 (90's indie band)
Beastie Beastie Boys - 90-95 (Pauls Boutique, Check your head, Ill Communication). Wasn't a huge fan at the time, but almost all my friends were, only me & another guy were somewhat 'rock only' & while BB were good, I just didn't get it all too much to be infatuated like they were.
Agree about CCR, 68-72 one of the best American bands ever.
Agree about CCR, great American rock band.
Re: Your Favorite Bands-with a twist
Out of curiosity (and because I don't care enough to look it up), how many of these are early in the careers of the respective band? I know The Beatles isn't, but on quick glance, most of the others appear to be.
what's interesting is not what point in their careers but how old the most prominent songwriters are....I think almost all were from 22-30 at the time of their peak on my lists. To me, that is the age when you are at your best as far as writing rock and roll type songs.
Re: Your Favorite Bands-with a twist
One thing about Pearl Jam, from 91-95 I truly think they were one of the best bands not only out there, but of all time. 10, Vs, and Vitalogy imo are great. Plus they had the song Yellow Ledbetter out there, but it wasn't an official release but people knew it & radios played it. They also had bootlegs/imports with the cult songs Dirty Frank and Footsteps (very eerie song) AND Jeff Ament & Stone Gossard were in Temple of the Dog, and Mike McCready was in Mad Season with Layne Staley.
Just a band on fire. I never got too into their post 95 stuff though.

Re: Your Favorite Bands-with a twist
Since most of mine have already been written about I'll do a bit on some others.
Nine Inch Nails(89-94, 05)
After Downward Spiral, Trent was nowhere near as good, he lost his quality control. I woulda put 08 in there for The Slip BUT he also released Ghosts I-IV which was just boring a lot of the time but was nice for what it was.
Pantera (90-94)
Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven are essential in any metal collection. Afterwards the band started to become even more shaky and the quality of the music suffered. The music before 1990 i.e. the more glam stuff, is also good but can't match anything from this period.
Machine Head (94-97, 07)
First two albums are metal classics, but then they chased trends for over half a decade and only really got back on track recently with their latest album The Blackening. If you haven't heard it get it now throught whatever means you get music. If you like metal (especially Thrash) it is essential. Unless their next album is stellar I would say it is their magnum opus, their Master of Puppets.
Megadeth (86, 90-97, 04-09)
Megadeth's first great period was Peace Sells, a seminal thrash metal classic of the eighties and a must have. The bass line to the title track is iconic. 90-97 is possibly the glory years of Megadeth- The Rust In Peace Lineup. Four great albums, Rust, Countdown, Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings. Each slightly different but showing a natural progression, grant towards a more. After this however they released a couple of duds, Dave injured himself and the band fell apart. Mustaine then gets it back together, him being the only original member but he can get away with it since hes the only main component of Megadeth unlike a certain band we know where that doesn't quite work. He has now released three great albums on a row and in my opinion Megadeth are entering another golden age and if were to quit now, would end on a very good high note.

AND I just remembered they had 2 songs on the Singles soundtrack. "State of Love & Trust" is one of my faves from them too.
