We all have our favorite bands and we also know that our favorite bands also have some better years than others. So, here are my favorite artists and the particular years that stand out to me. I also named the albums that make the time period special.
*Bob Dylan (65-67....Bringin It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisted, Blonde on Blonde, and The Basement Tapes)
*The Beatles (66-70....Revolver, Sgt Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be)
*Jimi Hendrix (67-68....Are You Experienced?, Axis:Bold as Love, Electric Ladyland)
*Rolling Stones (68-72....Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St)
*The Band (68-70...Music From Big Pink, The Band, Stage Fright)
*The Who (69-73....Tommy, Who's Next, Quadrophenia)
*Allman Brothers Band (69-72...The Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South, At Fillmore East, Eat a Peach)
*Led Zeppelin (69-71....first four albums)
*Neil Young (69-72...Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush, Harvest)
*Pink Floyd (71-79...Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, The Wall)
*The Replacements (84-87...Let It Be, Tim, Pleased To Meet Me)
*U2 (84-91...Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby)
*Gnr (87-91...AFD, Lies, UYI 1 and 2)
*Radiohead (95-97...The Bends, OK Computer)
*Wilco (96-02....Being There, Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)
*Tool (96-2006...Aenima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days)
tough to choose my favorite out of all of that, but in the end, that group of artists gets by far the most airplay over the last 20 years.

Out of curiosity (and because I don't care enough to look it up), how many of these are early in the careers of the respective band? I know The Beatles isn't, but on quick glance, most of the others appear to be.
U2 is mid career. Unforgettable Fire was their 4th album, Achtung Baby thier 7th
For me:
*U2 (1991 - 1996: Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Passengers, Pop) Still the best era for U2 in my opinion
*Soul Asylum (1988 - 1992: Hang Time, And the Horse They Rode in on, Grave Dancers Union) such a great time for the band. These 3 album prove they didn't sell out for mainstreme success.

Just a few...
*Guns N' Roses (1987-1993: Appetite For Destruction, GN'R Lies, UYI I & II) Counting the shows up to '93, but not The Spaghetti Incident. Although some cut off at '91, I did enjoy the bigger than life, over-indulgent "Stones" GN'R of '92 and '93. Their final show was July 17, 1993. It's been that way. Any attempt since has been a 'remake' of the original in some sort, although Chinese Democracy is a "Batman Begins" reboot of the band I will say.
*Alice In Chains (1990-1994: Facelift, Sap, Dirt, Jar of Flies) their absolute prime. Basically the grunge period, really defines that era. Before the attempted reinvention with Tripod and Layne's decline.
*Queen (1974-1980: Sheer Heart Attack, Night At The Opera, Day At The Races, News of the World, Jazz, The Game) Their absolute prime. I love the 80's & short-lived 90's stuff, but this was their zenith.
*Creedence Clearwater Revival (1968-1970: Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys, Cosmo's Factory, Pendulum) Only a short two years, but probably the quickest, biggest output by any artist of their stature. Fast and quality. Love it, love it, love it.
*Lynyrd Skynyrd (1973-1977: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Second Helping, Nuthin' Fancy, Gimme Back My Bullets, Street Survivors) One of the great rock bands of their time. As far as i'm concerned, they haven't existed since the plane crash.

I'll skip the obvious or the short-lived for some more interesting stuff.
Alice in Chains (1992-1996): I really like everything from Dirt onwards, including the non-album work (What the Hell Have I, A Little Bitter, Get Born Again, Died). Facelift shows potential but doesn't impress me too much.
Barenaked Ladies (1996-2001): Born on a Pirate Ship, Stunt, and Maroon. All solid cover to cover, the earlier albums had some misses although Gordon is mostly great and the later albums lost a bit of their fun.
Faith No More (1992-1998): A couple good songs came out of Chuck Mosley's time and Mike Patton had commercial success on his first try with them, but not until Angel Dust did this band become great in studio and live, and while Album of the Year lacked a little the supporting tour was amazing.
Nine Inch Nails (1989-2009): All 20 years.

Soundgarden 91-96
I can live without the pre-Shepard era, but there are monster tracks from that period as well. That Badmotorfinger- Down on the Upside 1-2-3 punch is one of the greatest runs by any band in history.

Pink Floyd 73-79
Need I say more?
Fleetwood Mac 75-87
This run rivals that of Soundgarden and Pink Floyd.
Slayer 88-90
Just pure ass kicking metal that wont be topped. If you were a stoner back then or a chick on her knees needing dope, this was your soundtrack. Good times.

She shits gold. Blows my mind how this chick pretty much wasted her teens and 20s fucking around at raves and shit. Most talented 'late bloomer' in the history of the universe.
