Re: Chris Cornell to rerecord Scream

Apparently tired of the criticism and negative reception of his latest solo album Scream, Chris Cornell will reportedly re-record the entire album with more of a guitar driven rock sound.  The Timbaland produced album was poorly received by hard-core Cornell fans and was largely ignored by the general public, with the Soundgarden and Audioslave singer releasing a record featuring club beats and pop production.

The record debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart when it was released in March, but plummeted 55 places in its second week and was off the 200 after 10 weeks.  Explore Music is reporting that musicians such as Jordan Zadorozny, from indie band Blinker the Star, have been reworking Scream's tracks to have more of a rock style.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, considering that Cornell staunchly supported the release when interviewed earlier this year.

"As a songwriter and creative person, I have to do what makes me happy," Cornell told Alternative Addiction during an interview in March.  "That changes; it goes into different worlds," Cornell explained.  "Sometimes its going to be in the world that those core fans of my earlier period love, and sometimes it won't."

Cornell defended his unlikely pairing with Timbaland, explaining that the chance to take a fresh approach was really the reason he was making a solo record in the first place.

"I sort of thought, well why not?  That's sort of why I am a solo artist - so I can do anything I want, when I want.  That was really all the thought that went into it."

Obviously Cornell has had second thoughts about that decision, leading Cornell to ultimately re-record the entire album.

BAD idea. Boggles the mind that someone as talented as Cornell would even consider this. He deserves brownie points for going in such a bold direction, but move the fuck on. The public just wasn't interested. Don't make us wait for a Soundgarden reunion just to try and shove this down our throats again.

Like I said when it was released, he should have gave these songs to an artist like Rihanna or Nicole Scherzinger. The songs aren't really that bad, they're just not songs you want to hear Cornell sing.

There's three decent songs on this:

Part of Me
Climbing Up the Walls
Two Drink Minimum

NOT worth a rerecord.

Why doesn't he just make a new album of rock songs? Shit. Get with Slash, Flea and Josh Freese again.

What a stupid idea. For all the reasons James mentioned.

At first glance it looks bad. However picture the average fan 10 years down the line looking back over Chris' career. As things stand once they come along the discography and reach scream they will lament the poor quality of the album and poor judgement on Cornells behalf.

Imagine looking back when scream had been re-recorded as a rock album. The original scream becomes a tiny blip on the radar that some die-hards will love while the average fan will think "Thank God for the re-record of that album"

It will probably be just ok, in which case it will not have been worth it. Why not write new songs?

I agree with you there, heck he took a shot. Myb rerecord it as a b-sides/Incesticide type album, but he should really rush it & do it real lo-fi low key. Don't put a whole year or so into it. Bang it out in a couple weeks.

Really though, just get back with Soundgarden, or put out a new rock solo album. A Re-release will just be polishing a turd. Selling the songs to other artists probably would have been the best idea in hindsight.

Some Soundgarden activity would make everyone forget about this album in no time.

Agreed. Cornell will actually just make himself look worse by this move. It'll make him seem like 'acceptance' and public success is all that matters in his musical outputs.

If he's such an 'artist'... he'll stand by his work. (Axl, are you reading?)

At all glances it looks bad. He probably can polish this turd, but when you're capable of whipping up a batch of diamonds, why waste time on turd polishing?

It's just a really odd decision on his part. He's very prolific, and wasting time on this is really out of character.

Time for recording isn't the issue. Cornell bangs everything out in a few weeks. The issue of redoing the album so soon is it will likely extend his solo tour for at least one more leg, and of course if he promotes it again on the talk show circuit.

I do agree that it needs to be some sort of bonus disc of sorts. Throw it on Itunes and for people who buy the first version, they get this one for free(or vice versa).
