Re: Megadeth Rerecording Classics?
Just found this at Megadeth.Com:
Droogies!
I know that when we did the remasters, that we were also going to re-release the Studio Originals approximately five (5) years later, and hopefully with some new recordings.
I thought it would also be cool to go in and just pick 11 Megadeth Classics and re-record them, since I own them. Maybe my last recording for roadrunner could be all re-recordings in the studio with Chris and I laying down whatever we felt at the time. Imagine if we did new studio versions of "Black Friday" and "Looking Down the Cross."
There are so many ideas and so much fun to be had. So lemme know about the back catalogue stuff.
What do you guys think? Interesting idea. I was skeptical against the AFD rerecord from new-gnr as I felt it was messing with perfection and established history/genius guitar etc.
I hold similar views here, although I must say the chemestry between Dave+Chris is pretty good and tempting to add to some older tracks - especially those recorded without Marty....or those with real bad production value.
I'd like to see a re-done "Return to Hangar" as it's better on live videos than in the studio, and I know that Chris could own those outtro shreds.
Maybe also "go to hell" and "five magics" cos I love the songs but they sound somewhat old in the way they were recorded.
Very controversial project in some regards though.

Re: Megadeth Rerecording Classics?
Anthrax did this with John Bush a few years ago on the the album Greater Of Two Evils, and I thought they did it successfully, as I was never a fan of their original singer. Some of the original 80's albums sound dated production wise, so it was nice to hear them recorded with fat modern production, guitars and drums, as well as John's harder vocal style.
Maybe it could work for Megadeth too.

Re: Megadeth Rerecording Classics?
I'm not a fan of rerecordings and I'm sure that Dave's goal is to end the Roadrunner contract with this pseudo-album. Hardcore fans will surely buy it, so he can get some cash with little work. It'd be another case if not the 'classics', but some 'filler' tracks would be rerecorded. Sometimes bad production, bad band dynamics or bad weather can turn a great song into a filler. If a band sees much more potential in a song they released years ago, then okay, record it again and add it as a b-side, or offer as a free download. But rerecording a full album worth material? Did the bad production happen so often?

Re: Megadeth Rerecording Classics?
I like re-recordings if enough time has passed, that the artist can remix them to a point that it adds to or re-inforces the greatness of a song.
But when it's done just to cash in (KISS). I'm not a fan. Smashes, Thrashes & Hits in '88, 80s-ized those KISS songs, which was fine by me, because it represented their vintage catalog, updated to the new image and sound of the 'unmasked' band.
That's when it does something.
But when it's just cashing in, like with Sonic Boom's bonus disc (another remix collection), it's just too much.
It should NEVER be done more than once. So chose your time wisely to pull the trigger on a remix collection.
I think if Axl can ever stablelize the GN'R lineup, the next album release should be like a Wal-Mart exclusive with a bonus disc of remixes to kind of embrace the new band.
Not that it's necessary. I'm just saying in that scenario, I would see it as "right" to do it.
If Axl was just sitting on his butt and wanted a new Ferrari, and did it. Fuck off. That's kind of how I feel about the whole thing.
