Re: What If........(episode 2)
After a 105 week delay, episode 2 is now here.
For the first one.....

------
Have decided to resurrect this, and will go a safe route with the second installment by using GNR in the scenario.
As you all know, Axl said in interviews in 88 that he could have put either SCOM, NR, or Don't Cry on AFD but chose SCOM because he felt it was the "worst of the three" and people weren't ready for the other two tracks yet.
That leads us to our 'What If?' question.....
What if November Rain is on Appetite for Destruction instead of Sweet Child O Mine? How would such a move have altered the band's rise to the top? While they were getting tons of attention with Jungle, the SCOM single is what sent the band into the stratosphere, and is also responsible for AFD becoming number one on the charts. Could the same thing have occurred with November Rain in 1987-88?
I would have to say no. While a band like Cinderella had success with 'Don't Know What You Got', I don't think the public would have warmed up to the band like they did with a ballad of that magnitude. In fact, it may have caused a severe backlash. Also take into account the track sequencing on AFD is brilliant and placing November Rain anywhere in it would have altered the record completely.
Even if it was a success, such a move would have also altered the Illusions records as well. UYI is known by the mainstream for two big reasons...... the 2 in 1 day release and November Rain. SCOM was such a strong track that it would have obviously been used here, and this changes the dynamics of the Illusions because now UYI I would have been missing that monster ballad, although this may have put more emphasis on Estranged.
Thoughts?
Re: What If........(episode 2)
i think as a choice it was a wiser move to go with SCOM, it has a bit of a pop feel to it which helped propell them into fame...i think NR would just have been too ambitious for a new band so i dont hink that it wouldve been given the time of day obviously...DC woulda still been a hit but i doubt it would've reached the level of SCOM so in the end if SCOM is not of AFD i feel that the band gets knocked down a notch in popularity,
on the other hand, if SCOM isnt on AFD then GNR prolly wouldnt have received the same attention for a followup album let alone a double monster like UYI...Gnr May have been foreced to release the illuysions separately, which may or may not have extended the life of the orig lineup

My thought is this. Axl was talking about the songs from his point of view. The basic structure and the Lyrics. Had November Rain been on AFD it would not have been the same song that appeared on UYI.
In fact I would go as far as to say that had November rain(or Don't Cry for that matter) been on AFD there would have been a Sweet Child style musical passage for the intro by slash. There would have been no keys/string synths on it (per the musical tastes of Duff) and it would have been a glorified Sweet Child of mine, with a some what different structure and a different set of Lyrics....
That's my opinion on this one

November Rain was originally just a 9 minute piano ballad with Axl playing. The lyrics were pretty much identical during AFD era as they appear on UYII. Axl was never gonna let that song be anything he didn't want it to be so had NR been included on AFD it most likely would've been damn close to how we know it now.

^^ Without the orchestra & violins & gospel singers. I LOVE the piano demo, and the acoustic demo, not a fan of the UYI version, too polished.
Personally, I think the lyrics would be the same, mostly piano only. As for would it be a hit & GnR making the same success, good question. I think yes, as everything & song GnR was doing back then was damn near lightning in a bottle, Plus, people would have thought "Wow, Rock anthems, piano ballads, is there anything these guys can't do??" I think it would've done great. But I think SCOM might have done worse on UYI with some cheexsy ass video. So, that may have been the bigger disappointment. I'm glad it worked out the way it did, I like SCOM alot.
Re: What If........(episode 2)
I think November Rain being on AFD would've altered the public's perception of the band.
They would've been viewed as no different than a Cinderella or Warrant if that track had been their big hit on AFD.
Don't Cry being on AFD would've probably kept their image closer to what we all know in this reality, BUT, I don't think Don't Cry would've been the hit that SCOM or NR were, which would've altered their success.
