Re: Dave Mustaine bitches about label, low album sales

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has commented on the interview he gave to Norway's Lydverket blog on August 7, 2009 at the Langham Hotel in London, England in which he spoke at length about his brief tenure as the guitarist in METALLICA. A video report (see below) containing excerpts from the chat was posted on the Lydverket web site on Wednesday (October 14) and was published on BLABBERMOUTH.NET yesterday.

In a post on MEGADETH's official forum from early this morning (Friday, October 16), Mustaine writes regarding the Lydverket interview, "These people are scum. Don't listen to their interviews, don't buy their shit magazine, don't go to their pathetic garbage website. And stand by, because as soon as I see that interviewer again, I am going to put him in a hospital. [Note: The Lydverket interview was actually conducted by a female reporter, Kristin Winsents, who is said to be one of the most experienced music journalists in Norway. — Ed.] That is a promise. I will find him too.

"Again, [the interview was] set up by Roadrunner [MEGADETH's record company] and left hanging by the label.

"Too bad the promo person was not there like I asked so this shit wouldn't happen.

"Thanks for nothing, [Roadrunner]."

In two other separate postings on the MEGADETH forum, Mustaine reveals his disdain for the U.S. branch of Roadrunner Records for allegedly dropping the ball in regards to the promotion of the band's new album, "Endgame".

He writes, "I don't know what to say. How a record company could be presented with a worldwide critically acclaimed record, and that they can let it plummet down the charts in just four weeks into the hundreds, is inexplicable.

"I knew I shouldn't have done this. Why didn't I trust myself?

"I regret a lot of things in my life, but this is the most regrettable."

He then addresses the label directly, stating, "Don't call me, [Roadrunner]. You are kidding yourself if you think I am going to talk to you. You are too late, and I don't appreciate your threats. I can't wait until bands start walking away from you. I gave you a masterpiece and the whole world has watched you fuck this one up."

"Endgame" has sold around 72,000 copies in the United States since its release four weeks ago. The CD has registered the following U.S. weekly sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan:

Week 1: 44,696
Week 2: 12,833
Week 3: 8,640
Week 4: 5,583

-------------------------------

He does have a point. Labels really seem to drop the ball on bands/albums that don't take off immediately. Its like they don't know how to market anything in this culture. Downtown Records totally abandoned Amanda Blank's album right from the start. The first week they were pushing free remixes of the first single when they should have been promoting the actual record.

Yeah, he was reaching a bit with that comment. I do agree with him regarding label fuck ups, but he cant really expect to have the sales he used to have. Megadeth just aren't that relevant anymore, and there's long time fans like me who haven't even heard this album yet. I'm in no rush to hear it either.

Though he went a touch overboard... The record is amazing... It pisses all over anything that Megadeth or Metallica have done since 1990

Really?

If the whole world were paying attention, wouldn't they have bought the masterpiece?

Publications worldwide have given this album high reviews.  Maybe he was reaching a bit, but it's damn good and a lot of the world agrees.

So what are you saying is the cause?

The thing is Megadeth's new album has been acclaimed by most crtitics and fans alike to be amongst their best work, and certainly far superior to the last several albums.

Many fans, including myself are reporting that live, the new lineup, featuring Chris Broderick, is the most impressive since Marty left and a full return to form. Obviously my opinion doesn't matter, but my point is there's a bit of buzz amongst the fanbase...and the hardrock/metal world I'd have thought.

Furthermore, Megadeth does a lot from a 'new' industry perspective too, they have a strongline presence, communicate and interact frequently with fans, and even gave away the first single "Headcrusher" from the album free on the site.

So it's not like Dave is stuck in a 1980s industry mindset.

I think in this case the record label has quite simply droped the ball in the usa and other markets. Either that or people just don't buy CDs anymore regardless of the quality of the record.

I really like Megadeth, and there's no doubting Dave's musical talents, but man he sure does like to bitch and moan. I keep reading headlines where he says he's made peace with everyone (Metallica included) and then a week later he's bitching about everyone and everything again. Get over it Dave and just let your music do the talking.

It took way too long for the music video for Headcrusher to come out for one. The album dropped, the single was released back in June and we got the video for the single after the album dropped. The video was recorded in July, so I have no idea what took so long but that's one thing. It also had strong potential as a metal single.
