Its finally on the verge of happening. 
Two things needed to happen for the possibility of a reunion occurring....
Cornell and Thayil thawing the ice in their relationship
Cornell and Shepard(much animosity there) being seen together
Those two things have now happened. The only question remaining is....... what do they do next?
SOMETHING is going to happen. Are they just going to collaborate on putting together that box set? A tour? A new album? I'll take either or all of those options. This band died way before its time. Audioslave kills, but its a wart on Soundgarden's ass.
Also thrilled that Shepard will be involved. When Cornell mentioned "originals" earlier this year, I was worried. If Cornell and Shepard have spent any amount of time together other than this event, you can bet your ass that at least a few song ideas have already been thrown around.
I'll take this over a GNR reunion any day of the week.
The Temple of the Dog reunion not really that big of a deal, although obviously its cool. They have reunited several times over the years to perform that track.

I agree James, Soundgarden split too early, altrhough the possibility of tarnishing an unblemished legacy has to be a demotivating factor in reforming
That said, grunge seems to be back on the ascent with Pearl Jam delivering their first listenable album in over a decade and Alice in Chains releasing a scorcher
Couple this with Cornells latest solo album shocker and you have fertile ground for something here....
Take it over a GN'R reunion? Close, but not quite...

Yeah that is definitely where the band needs to tread lightly. A tour and a release of that box set wouldn't harm them, but when it comes to new material, if there's nothing there then I don't want them to push the issue just for the sake of doing it.
If they cant come up with some kick ass music within a few weeks of starting, I'd rather they just scrap the sessions.
That box set needs to come out ASAP. I'm still drooling over Thayil's comments earlier this year about a bunch of unheard songs that will be on it. 
Would love to see a Christmas release of that.
They may attempt a reunion under the radar. Cornell has not mentioned any of this Soundgarden stuff on his Twitter page. That way if it blows up in their faces before getting off the ground, they can just act like it never even happened.

What will be on the box set?
Stuff that was released only in Europe, Australia, and Japan, on movie soundtracks, sessions we did for John Peel in England, and then stuff that was never released — demo versions of things, alternate versions of songs, and songs that were recorded, but never released in any form, that we would simply have to mix and maybe re-edit, which would be like brand new Soundgarden songs. Songs that no one's heard, except for maybe a few people close to Soundgarden's circle.
What are some titles of these unreleased tracks?
"Dirty Candy," "Ocean Fronts," "Open Up," "Summation" — that was a pretty heavy song, in 5/4 time. "Ocean Fronts" is a little bit more of a trippy, arpeggiated song. A song called "Beast," which is going to sound exactly like the title. "Beast" and "Summation" were really strong songs live — from the mid-late '80s. I cannot believe those two songs have never been released. "No Shame" is another title. There's enough stuff out there to fill up three or four albums. There's enough original stuff that's been released but hasn't been compiled — B sides — to make an album. There's enough covers to make an album. There's enough remixes that Moby, Steve Fisk and Bill Rieflin did, that could constitute a pretty interesting EP. There's enough unreleased stuff to make an album. It's just getting the business and creative machine on the same page.

The Pixies came back just to do shows and have recently toured their alt rock masterpiece Doolittle. I believe the recorded one song and attempted an album but scrapped it. I personally see nothing wrong with that and would definitely LOVE to see a Soundgarden greatest hits tour.
