I'm getting a male Pyrenean Mastiff in a few weeks.
This has actually changed since I have come to the decision that it wouldn't be fair (for the dog itself) to have such a big breed in an apartment with no personal lawn.
Instead I'm going to visit a long-coated male White Swiss Shepherd this Sunday! I'm looking forward to it.
Hopefully we'll get along so that I can pick him up in a couple of weeks.
You should look into that option, Neemo. Their temperament is different from the ordinary German Shepherd.

i might be going to check out these pups on sunday, they are only 6 or 7 weeks old so they arent even ready to be weened yet
should be a smart dog anyway, we'll see how i feel when i see them, dunno if i'm getting second thoughts or not but its a big decision to get a dog 
i got a book from the library about positive training and before and after getting a puppy...gonna check that out first

I have three kids and two yellow Labs. I'll never get another dog. They are perfect for kids. Yes, they shed, a lot, but I've gotten used to it. I have a lot of light-colored clothes.
Age of your kids is a non-issue if you ask me.
Personally, I'd rescue a dog from a shelter. They usually are trained, usually have their shots, and they will appreciate the hell out of you for taking them hone.
That's what we did. One of Labs is about 11; the other is 5.
