Re: DJ Ashba says GNR rehearses again!!
That might be my favorite Finck clip ever because I couldn't hear him playing!
Seriously though, I do see the energy he brings to the stage and agree that it is a strong point for him. I guess I just can't get past the playing to fully appreciate the energy thing.
Good post and thanks for answering the question.

Re: DJ Ashba says GNR rehearses again!!
Interesting discussion guys.
This might be semantics but I disagree with the idea that to be 'musically talented' you have to be competent in or adapt to a lot of different styles. Otherwise you'd have to say someone like BB king is also untalented...and that's just insane.
Nothing wrong with being a master at one single style. Robin is master of his particular dischord/dissonance bluesy industrial mixed sound and while I think it suited the new songs more than the old, it doesn't make him unmusical.
Anyway...absolutely no argument from me about fink's passion, in fact, his stage presence and the energy he put into the shows went a long way for me too.

So you don't think BB King could play anything other than the blues? I refuse to believe that (though I'm not going to put the effort into proving it).
There's nothing wrong with having one style you're best at and play almost all the time, however you cannot be considered musically talented if you're a one trick pony and you can't even remotely play any different style with any kind of ability.
Re: DJ Ashba says GNR rehearses again!!
A bend out of tune but when he has his own like just him solo spots it is as someone else said comic relief/piss break. Theres no flow, there seems to be no idea of how to create something musically. He can obviously pull all the techniques off but thats when he's got time like in the studio. Not in this situation, not in a live setting.
Finck- great in studio, love his work on CD, shocking live

BB King is a blues man.
If you asked him to play Stairway To Heaven he probably couldn't play it.
"i don't do chords," he says when they were making the song 'When Love Comes to Town with U2.
He's not a student of music but he's a student of life and he's got a whole lotta soul and creativity.

Could he play it upon request? Probably not. Could he play it if he was hired for a Led Zepplin tribute band and had 5 years to perfect it? I bet he could.
