Re: Derren Brown Predicting Lottery Numbers Live on TV
Not sure how many of you watched this, don't even know if you have it in the US, but on Wednesday night Derren Brown predicted the National Lottery draw live. Someone has thrown a BBC/C4 splitscreen on youtube to show that there was no time-delay.
See how he did:
The second episode is on tonight where he'll reveal his method for everyone to try at home. Obviously theres some scam involved but given that anyone can apparently try it at home it kinda rules out green screen, laser technology etc.
Was cool watching it live, anyone got any ideas about how he did it?
Re: Derren Brown Predicting Lottery Numbers Live on TV
Yeah we heard about that down here. I would be really curious to know how it was done.
Seen some speculation about shit being written on the balls he has as the real ones come out somehow. e.g. lasers or some other weird crap but I'm not sure how that could be possible.
I have seen footage showing that the ball of Darren's on the far left appears to move slightly at one point or be slightly higher than there others for a a short time, but personally I couldn't see it.
You would have to assume that there was some remote manner to burn/write/print whatever those numbers onto the balls Darren had as the real balls were drawn and announced, but I've got no idea how he did it.
Great job I say!
It's BS too when he says he can't show the numbers before the draw because legally the BBC have to announce them first. There is nothing illegal about saying what you GUESS the numbers will be. That proves that they are written on the balls somehow after they are drawn.
If he could show his numbers before the draw actually takes place then he would be a FREAK!!!! A rich one too and you wouldnt tell fucken anyone about it.
Fantastic trick though I take my hat off to him!
Re: Derren Brown Predicting Lottery Numbers Live on TV
What does it matter? You've already bought your ticket, with the non-winning numbers.
Predicting them just before they are put on TV doesn't mean shit. You just find out you lost earlier than you already knew you'd lose.
Like Aussie said... now if this cat could tell me a technique to figure them out hours before the draw, so I can get a ticket with the winning numbers... Power Ball here we come baby!
Re: Derren Brown Predicting Lottery Numbers Live on TV
His explanation was rubbish and he knows it. In fact he said it himself at the end "It's a trick". He was never gonna really tell us how it was done even if it was legit or something as fraudulent as a camera trick. Maybe at the end of this series the whole thing will all make sense.

Its his best trick yet. The every word he speaks every intonation and rasp is placed to effect your subconscious and your vision of reality to make you think you are watching him predict the lotto numbers. If you mute your TV you snap out of it and see that hes just broadcasting a clip of an obese guy jacking off into his special K. Genius

The explanation was poorly executed but the show itself was entertaining. The missus was squeeling when the poor bloke had to stamp on the knife hidden under the cup Despite the poor explanation its Mission Accomplished for Derren really, had the whole nation talking about this and ratings will be through the roof.
Did you notice Derren was holding a snowflake during the Events trailer tonight? That was probably a rather obvious hint towards freeze-framing, without him just coming out and telling us all that it was camera trickery, which would have been a bit shit really.
The fact that he also said "This show uses mis-direction..." right from the offset indicates that none of his 3 possible solutions are the correct answer. He admitted he was about to bullshit the viewers and then waffled on for an hour - loved it

Re: Derren Brown Predicting Lottery Numbers Live on TV
If you think about it this is a variation on the famous magican trick peformed by Chris Angel, David Copperfield and countless others...where you get the audience to choose words/numbers that you earlier predicted, then you open a box/envelope/etc that was in view the full time and reveal the same words. Only variation is that he's using the government to choose the random numbers and not the crowd, which makes it better cos with the crowd people always assume the audience is paid off when that's not how the trick works. I do love a good bit of illusion though.
Re: Derren Brown Predicting Lottery Numbers Live on TV
He's one smug bastard, I have to say I don't rate him highly at all, and all he did was NOT predict the draw on an actual National Lottery draw, it was to make some ping-pong balls he SAID he drew the numbers on earlier be the same as the lottery number.... small difference but critical IMO, and not so amazing really, though I confess I don't know how he did those (but then I don't know how they do simple card tricks, not my specialty)
And I think he had a time delay of at least several seconds as he dramatically WROTE the numbers as they were drawn in the real lottery onto a board, then later revealed the ping-pong balls with the same numbers on them. Meh!
If he'd had a jury of 12 people who never met him (ie not influenced) see the numbers, or broadcast them first, for extra intergrity, then yeah hats off to the guy.
But he didn't. He later made some ping-pong balls match the lottery. I bet next week, he'll saw a chick in half...
Oh and @monkeychow the Nat. Lottery's not the govt, though I bet they wish it was lol, it's a private company licensed by the govt.

Re: Derren Brown Predicting Lottery Numbers Live on TV
^ fair point....i was flashing back to as a kid, here on Australian TV its the same, a company has a license to run the lottery, but they always made a big show of showing the "government inspectors" monitoring the draw to re-assure the audience everything was straight and narrow....dont know if they still do it...dont watch the draw on TV these days....but yeah....i think that was why in my head it felt like governement people doing the draw!
Re: Derren Brown Predicting Lottery Numbers Live on TV
Just a follow up on this in case anyone's interested...
BBC news - He then promised viewers they would discover the secret of the trick on Friday's show.
During How To Win The Lottery - which attracted a peak of 4.6 million viewers - he revealed that he had worked out the lottery numbers by asking a group of 24 people to guess them.
Once he had their answers Brown said he added the numbers up for each ball and divided them by 24.
However, Roger Heath-Brown, Professor of Pure Mathematics at the University of Oxford, has dismissed Brown's explanation.
"Mathematically it is complete rubbish. It is a bluff on his part," he said.
And David Spielgelhalter, professor of public understanding of risk at the University of Cambridge added: "There is a difference between guessing between the weight of an ox and guessing lottery balls, which is un-guessable.
"That is just a clear wind-up and complete nonsense. There is absolutely no way he did that."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8252235.stm
That makes my head hurt - how can 24 people have the correct average of the numbers?
Why 24? WTF?!
Some of you here are probably more schooled than me, any comments?
Meh.
