His fucking voice and stage presence were pretty fucking important too. His pipes were basically an instrument and were HUGE in defining their sound.
Agreed. I might get labeled reunion, but at the very end of the day, you can do Guns without the rest of them... but you can't do Guns without Axl.
Period.

yes and no
Axl's attempt to re-ignite Guns minus Slash would suggest more no than yes, but in terms of Axl being critical to any feasible incarnation of Guns, well theres no argument there.

I think what Axlin means is Izzy, Slash, Duff and Adler could all get together and start a band but no matter what it would never sound like Guns because it lacks Axl. Wheras even with a completely new lineup the songs still sound pretty much the same live and that's because they've got the guy who makes it all happen: Axl. Without his vocals they would just sound like a tribute band. A Damn good one but still a tribute band. Axl's vocals are the most defining feature of the Guns sound.

True, but this goes for most recognizable vocalists. I mean, the Offspring wouldn't sound like the Offspring at all without Dexter Holland, but that's not really saying anything about the guy's talent, is it?
What made Appetite happen was the unique combination of people working on those songs, recording them at that time with that attitude and they were all pretty important to the end product. Take out any single one of them and this wouldn't have happened. I think that's more important than deciding which one would be needed most to build an almost identical sounding cover-band around. You can teach anyone to play the songs on guitar, bass & drums, but you can't teach someone to sound like Axl. That's not important, the song writing is what it's all about.
The difference back then was that there was some form of mutual respect and understanding that vanished with the years. Axl can hire whoever he wants, he's never going to get that type of chemistry going again if he wants be seen as the king of the hill all the time. That's why I think a reunion stand the most chance of ever giving us something special again, some form of mutual respect would almost seem imperative for that to even be contemplated.

whatever.....no way in hell does someone like Adler bring as much to the table as someone like Axl or Slash or Izzy. The simple fact is that vocalists like Axl are VERY VERY VERY hard to come by. You put Brett Michaels with the other 4 and you get SHIT. You put Vince Neil with them and they are SHIT. Axl is unique and you can rationalize and continue to try to convince yourself all day long, but he is still a special talent. Yes, you can argue that he is better with certain musicians and you can say his album wasn't popular. However, you can't say he is not an ambitious, unique, talented "character".

I'm not trying to convince anything...I'm just saying that other bands have done it before...some have been successful, some haven't you won't know how the public reacts until the CD hits the shelves
I am in no way trying to downplay Axl's abilities, he prolly my favorite vocalist ever, nor am i trying to boost Adler's value (i think he's a douche)

Izzy, Slash, Duff, name your drummer could go the Journey route and scour the internet for the best Axl Rose soundalike and go from there. That Filipino dude sounds more like Steve Perry than Steve Perry himself today. Not that they would EVER do that. But if they did, I think some people would argue that that's more GNR than Axl's version.

For the record I wouldn't consider Slash, Izzy, Duff, drummer, Axl impersonator to be more GNR than THE GNR. But I know some would. And again, it will never happen. I don't think the goal of forming Velvet Revolver was to sound like Guns N' Roses. If it was, they wouldn't have chosen Scott Weiland.
