Re: Senator Ted Kennedy Dead at 77

Sen. Edward Kennedy, the indefatigable liberal icon whose 47 years in the Senate were often overshadowed by his twin roles as keeper and casualty of the Camelot myth, died late Tuesday night after a long battle with brain cancer. He was 77 and died at the famed Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port, Mass.

"We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever," the heartbroken Kennedy family said in a statement.

"We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said, "We have lost our patriarch."

Kennedy was diagnosed in May 2008 with a malignant brain tumor, discovered after he suffered a seizure at the Hyannis Port compound.

Doctors initially said the cancer could kill Kennedy within a year. But the tough old Democrat fought bravely to outlast the grim prognosis.

His large family took advantage of the extra time.

"It let us have the chance to tell him how much we love him," said his son Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) "and him to be there to hear it."

Kennedy was largely absent from Washington after the diagnosis.

Rumors of his deteriorating condition heated up when Kennedy missed three big August events: His sister Eunice's funeral, the confirmation vote for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, and the ceremony where he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Kennedy's low profile over his last month was a dramatic contrast with his tumultuous life.

Thrust into the role of family patriarch by the assassinations of his two brothers, the star-crossed Kennedy endured a heartrending series of tragedies - several of them self-inflicted.

The Massachusetts Democrat never fully escaped the taint of Mary Jo Kopechne and Chappaquiddick. He struggled with alcohol, and suffered through the untimely deaths of nephews David by drug overdose, Michael in a skiing accident and JFK Jr. in a plane crash.

He never reached the White House, absorbing a stinging defeat in his 1980 challenge to incumbent Jimmy Carter. Critics said he lacked his brother John's intellect and his brother Bobby's passion.

The white-haired Kennedy, with his well-worn visage and thick New England accent, amassed a staggering legacy of legislation that made him one of the nation's most respected senators.

His extraordinary reach covered issues from health care to immigration to gun control; his strident opposition helped doom the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Robert Bork in 1987.

Regardless of what side of the fence people are on, cant deny the impact this guy had on politics. A true icon in the political arena. A huge void will be felt in the Senate.

I had the same thought about Stern when I heard this EARLY this morning.  I can almost imagine he, Fred, and Artie on the phone right now all doing their impressions.

Is that right? wow, wasn't he just on vacation 2 weeks ago though when someone else died?? What's up with all the vacations?!

Yeah, I saw this this morning before leaving. Wasn't unexpected, with cancer, you never know what condition people are in, unless you're close to them. Some people live 2-5 years fighting it, others 6 months. Still, sad, for better or worse he truly was the definition of "Politician" in every sense of the word. The local guy done good, the rise to prominence, the connections, the scandals, the power.

I think also though, he's the end of an era for alot of baby boomers. They grew up in an era where you looked up to politicians & the President, with honor & respect. I have a feeling that all changed when his brother was killed. That really must have been a world changing event, you had to live thru to understand. It wasn't just "The President was shot", it was "The innocence is gone, the good times are over". Similar to 9/11 in the impact it had on people & for months & years after. Then Vietnam came, rock n roll exploded, hippies, protests, Woodstock, RFK, MLK, Nixon impeached, the economy in the 70's etc.. everything changed. It probably wasn't until 1984 where things really stabalized ina way.

RIP

Yeah Stern takes a lot of vacations these days.  On your normal holdiays, this week kind of surprised me though with Labor Day being 2 weeks away.  Wonder if he'll come back for a week then go back on vacation.  Or maybe he'll just take Labor Day off and work a 3 day week since they take Fridays off anyway.

The Show has been off on vacation when Anna Nicole Smith, Michael Jackson, John Hughes (to a lesser extent), and now Ted Kennedy have died.  There may be others I'm forgetting.  But they have quite the streak going.  They've made their share of cracks about Ted over the years but Howard has said many times how much he respected the man.  It's all in good fun.

Couldn't stand his generation or their boomer politics. Maybe Byrd will die next, so the Dixiecrats will finally die off.
