KISS needs at least 2 solid discs. Disc 1 would be all 70's, and Disc 2 would be mostly 80's & some 90's. I think that'd be a solid collection. I just don't know what all i'd want on it. Lots of material to choose from.

Damn right! I think the 80s stuff is underrated, and particularly "Revenge" from 92 is way underrated. Thats a damn good hard rock/metal record. 9

The follow up to Revenge (the name escapes me right now) was really good too.  They had re-united and were touring in makeup again by the time it came out, so it pretty much got no promo and seemed to be just put out there to clear the books of the Kulick/Singer material, but I dug it.

Yeah man, thats "Carnival of Souls". Great album. Its a shame that it just got thrown out there. But it was recorded right before the Reunion, and of course the reunion changed everything. Its an album that will never get the attention it should because of the situation around when it was released. I remember getting a bootleg copy of it on cassette back before it was released, before the Reunion.

I thought about throwing some Carnival of Souls stuff on there, but thought it'd kill flow.

Too this day, it's just weird as hell to hear Gene & Paul trying to do Alice In Chains/Soundgarden type music.

Sometimes it'd hard to hold back laughter, because you know there's no way they took it all that serious. They couldn't. They're fuckin KISS.

Rain was my favorite cut off of Souls...

Swung from their nuts as a child, but grew out of it pretty damn quick. Their Unmasked album was in CONSTANT rotation on my record player when I was in first grade, and even though its considered by most fans as their worst album, I actually like it but probably simply for nostalgic reasons rather than the actual album being great.

I could make a hits album of theirs, and it might not even take up a full disc.

Hard Luck Woman
2000 Man
Dr. Love
God of Thunder
Naked City
Tears Are Falling
Lick It Up
Hide Your Heart
Let's Put the X in Sex
Unholy

They have a few other good songs, but that's the cream of my Kiss crop.

Add strutter and that's about all the Kiss I can stand.

EDIT: My GOD! I'm listening to Rain now. That's some cool shit. I'm gonna have to go find me a copy of Carnival.

You could probably find a copy for $5 somewhere. Its always cheap. Some of the best value you can get for little money.

"Hate" is a great opening song on that album. Punches you in the mouth, and set up the rest of the record well.

Yeah I just "found" a copy that I'm going to preview. If I like it I'll probably go to vinyl fever or Best Buy tomorrow and see if they have it.

I had a cousin once, that was a total KISS mark, like 70's era. His favorite album was Destroyer, he dressed up as "The Starchild" every Halloween, and really dug classic KISS. Then we had another cousin in our circle, that was total grunge. Nirvana was his favorite band, etc. Couldn't stand KISS.

So my (KISS) cousin was going through his record collection, and pulled out Carnival of Souls and said, "that's their worst album. I hate the 80's stuff, but that's even worse". I asked why, and he explained "it's KISS doing grunge music", and naturally I reacted "good God". He said, "you can have it", so I took the album, gave it the once over, and was like "hmm, not as bad as I thought", and I took the album to the (grunge) cousin, and said listen to this. I just put the disc in, and didn't tell him what it was. He was like "this is fuckin' awesome, who is it? That one singer in there kind of sounds like Paul Stanley from KISS, but with a lower voice" and I said... "that is KISS". He totally freaked, but in a good way. He instantly became a fan of KISS - but only THAT album. Nothing else.

The weird thing was when KISS came up in discussions later on...

There's was the 70's KISS guy... wearin' make up, talking about how Destroyer is the greatest album ever.

There was me, the 80's KISS guy, talking about how Asylum is there best album.

Then there's the 90's KISS guy, who thinks Carnival of Souls is their magnum opus.

14

Needless to say, it was quite weird to ever get Detroit Rock City, Tears Are Falling & I Will Be There all on the radio together. 16

I know a lot of people say "Carnival of Souls" is their grunge album, but I dont really think so. Its a little darker than some of their stuff, but I wouldnt say its a grunge album. Kind of like how people say "Dynasty" is a KISS disco album, but if you listen to the album, the only one that has much disco flavor to it is "I Was Made For Lovin You". The rest is like classic KISS.
