Re: Best Album of the 80s Elimination- Round 4
wow....can you say fanboy?
chill man I'm not a fan personally, but i can see that he helped usher in his style of music....though i feel that NIN has been pretty stale for a long time....PHM is my fav album of his but i still would never listen to it on any kind of regular basis...to say that metallica is not influencial is pretty ignorant though...both NIN and Metallica are pretty big hitters both sales and influence wise
100% Fanboy

I vote off Ride the Lightning, we can't have 3 Metallica albums in the top 10 or so, plus, it isn't the best if it isn't Metallica's best so it makes it an easier decision.... Gone. There's about 5 or 6 albums that need to go, regardless of order, so I'm not concerned about which is better than which. Just get them out.
Yeah I can see where you're coming from, but i still believe more bands are influenced by RTL than by the NIN album. Just cos something isn't big immediately doesn't mean its never big. And also I personally prefer Metallica to NIN. But still, each to their own, so fair enough if you disagree with me.
NO way are more bands influenced by Metallica than NIN. Or RTL than PHM. Metallica influenced hard rock/metal bands. Rtl Influenced hard rock bands/metal.
NIN influence HardRock/metal, Industrial, Electronic, Indie, Avant Garde bands, Art Rock bands, Hip Hop artists, Pop bands, Goth bands, Emo bands, JOHNNY FUCKING CASH, DAVID FUCKING BOWIE, DAVID FUCKING GILMOUR Nu-Metal bands, Mainstream Rock
Heres a list of bands that Openly state their Love for NIN:
Avenged Sevenfold
Sevendust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyZkXiaBepQ)
Arcade Fire
Saul Williams
Tom Morello
Good Charlotte
30 Seconds to Mars
David Bowie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCMLwbdSrTY)
David Gilmour
Garry Numan
Muse
Axl Rose
Moby
Puddle of Mud
Cradle of Filth
Janes Addiction
Ministry
Linkin Park
Marilyn Manson... Fuck it just hit me.... NIN influenced Bowies in his Industrial phase, Trent remixed his songs and toured with bowie with both of them taking the Stage at the same time.
... He inspired Johnny Cash with his song Hurt..
... He Recently appeared with Gary Numan who said NIN had really changed the way he approached making electronic music after the 80s...
... David Gilmour of Floyd had been a fan for a long time. He CAme to the Bowie NIN tour and got up onstage and David Bowie David Gilmour and Trent Reznor all gave an amazing rendition of comfortably Numb
This is one of the Greatest Recordings ever made. David Bowie, David Gilmour and Trent Reznor, The Immortals
I dn't care how influential you think Metallica are Show Me one HUGE Artist of the Size of Bowie Gilmour or Cash that has Payed tribute to them in such a way.... Its pretty easy to have an influence on some Kids who buy records and think a "metal" image is cool so they grow their hair and listen to Metallica. Thats just god marketing.
Show me 3 of the GREATEST MUSICIANS TO EVER WALK THE EARTH that are willing to BAck Metallica and you might have a chance.
Just because Kids with no taste like them does not make them more influential than a n Artist that has influenced some of the greatest artists of our time. And thses are artists that came before NIN but were so inspired by what NIN did that they backed them whole heartedly
Metallica were cheesy band of losers back in their heyday and are the same today. NIN have ALWAYS been relevant even when Trent wasn't so famous.
For anyone interested have a look at the piece Bowie wrote for Rolling Stone in 2004 about Nine Inch Nails
we're not voting off the fucking artist... unlike some voting off PHM, i LOVE NIN... however... PHM is not as good as RTL, in my opinion.... same with Jane's Addiction's Nothing's Shocking and 1984.....
... and please be careful. we certainly don't all have the same taste. those "cheesy losers" were responsible for some of the greatest metal records ever produced...they may have been a bunch of zit-faced, long haired, ripped jeaned drunks... but from 82-91 they were brilliant...and while YOU may not be a big fan, some of us REVERE them....
don't make ME bust out a list of artists that metallica influenced, because
a) it's hot out, and i don't really feel like it...
and b) this list would be much much much longer than yours...

I like anyone who votes off something because they don't like it. I get a little bothered when something gets votes due to its genre, but I can live with it, because it's just an honest opinion as well. But voting due to influence or the artist gets too murky.
Looks like we'll be seeing PHM, The Police, RTL, and Nothing's Shocking go in the next couple rounds.

Re: Best Album of the 80s Elimination- Round 4
I don't know, PHM was very influential and while TDS was as well I'm not sure it's impact is still felt. PHM, Trent's initial experiment of turning pop songs upside down and making them dark and angry may have had more long term impact that the mid-90s industrial phase led by TDS' production value.

Its not that I don't like them. Its just that. I don't think they have been as influential. NIN are influential across the board. Metallica are influential but its usually kept just to metal circles
Re: Best Album of the 80s Elimination- Round 4
Personally, I think PHM was more infuential (knocked alot of doors down for acts like Zombie, Filter, Rage, and helped shape pop music), but calling Metallica a bunch of losers is just wrong. Laughable, in fact. Instead of debating this album is better/more influencial than this album, we need to focus on "Is it the best album of the 80's". In both cases, I'm willing to say they are not (although PHM was prolly the most ahead of it's time, and the Beasties was too damn good to go that soon, but whatev). Hence, I don't care which of 'em goes.
Re: Best Album of the 80s Elimination- Round 4
I said that earlier PaSnow. Whilst I was debating the influence i regularly brought up the point: isn't it meant to be the best album. Now when you think of it that way is RIL the best album of the 80s. No. Is it better than a lot of the albums up there. Yes.
Re: Best Album of the 80s Elimination- Round 4
Personally Im hoping for a win for Def Leppard here. Those are 2 unbelievable albums that were huge at the time. Today they are almost forgotten by the mainstream. Hysteria gave Thriller a run for its money back in the Day. As I type I got Pyromania Blasting on ye olde CD player..remember those things... Right now Die Hard the Hunter is pouring out and Im on a semi. I can tell ye faithfully that come Billy's Got A Gun I will be needeing a new pleasure proof keyboard
