Re: Best Album of the 80s Elimination- Round 4
I seriously don't understand how people can dismiss Ride The Lightning like that, it has some incredible music on it, things that have inspired so widely, not just in metal, but way beyond. Admittedly it wasn't that big a record at the time, but looking at it now, I think its way more influential than a lot of the other records on the list. But then again I'm a huge Metallica fan, so I would say that.
Oh and I vote NIN this round too, never really thought that much of any of their albums save for the odd song here and there
You don't see a huge contraadiction here?? You state RTL was hugely influence etc, yet wasn't big in it's time... Then vote of a hugely influential album, which wasn't huge in it's time. Just find it funny, that's all.
I vote off Ride the Lightning, we can't have 3 Metallica albums in the top 10 or so, plus, it isn't the best if it isn't Metallica's best so it makes it an easier decision.... Gone. There's about 5 or 6 albums that need to go, regardless of order, so I'm not concerned about which is better than which. Just get them out.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from, but i still believe more bands are influenced by RTL than by the NIN album. Just cos something isn't big immediately doesn't mean its never big. And also I personally prefer Metallica to NIN. But still, each to their own, so fair enough if you disagree with me.

NO way are more bands influenced by Metallica than NIN. Or RTL than PHM. Metallica influenced hard rock/metal bands. Rtl Influenced hard rock bands/metal.
NIN influence HardRock/metal, Industrial, Electronic, Indie, Avant Garde bands, Art Rock bands, Hip Hop artists, Pop bands, Goth bands, Emo bands, JOHNNY FUCKING CASH, DAVID FUCKING BOWIE, DAVID FUCKING GILMOUR Nu-Metal bands, Mainstream Rock

I dn't care how influential you think Metallica are Show Me one HUGE Artist of the Size of Bowie Gilmour or Cash that has Payed tribute to them in such a way.... Its pretty easy to have an influence on some Kids who buy records and think a "metal" image is cool so they grow their hair and listen to Metallica. Thats just god marketing.
Show me 3 of the GREATEST MUSICIANS TO EVER WALK THE EARTH that are willing to BAck Metallica and you might have a chance.
Just because Kids with no taste like them does not make them more influential than a n Artist that has influenced some of the greatest artists of our time. And thses are artists that came before NIN but were so inspired by what NIN did that they backed them whole heartedly
Metallica were cheesy band of losers back in their heyday and are the same today. NIN have ALWAYS been relevant even when Trent wasn't so famous.

I'm not a fan personally, but i can see that he helped usher in his style of music....though i feel that NIN has been pretty stale for a long time....PHM is my fav album of his but i still would never listen to it on any kind of regular basis...to say that metallica is not influencial is pretty ignorant though...both NIN and Metallica are pretty big hitters both sales and influence wise
