Re: Best Album of the 80s Elimination- Round 1
Huh, yeah, I can't say that song sounds familiar. Myb I'm thinking of someone else. A song I always liked from those times were Edie Brickell's 'What I Am'.
In fact, she had a song Circle of Friends in the early 90's, I might be thinking of her.
Excuse me while I get this out of my system.
A couple other gems from Martika's debut album, which peaked at #15 on the Billboard 200 in 1989 by the way.

Didn't know hardcore Martika fans existed.
It's a very select group. How'd that girl go wrong and not become a star? Had a solid debut album, then started working with Prince in the early 90's. What happened?

A TON of artists(not just singers, actors as well) got buried in the 80s. Pop culture was just filled to the rim already and there simply wasn't enough room to accommodate everyone.
Another good example is Kerri Green. She was in some huge movies in the mid 80s(Lucas, Goonies, Summer Rental), and basically became a star among the teenybopper crowd. She vanished in a nanosecond, and worked very sporadically since.
Could have easily had a career on the level of Winona Ryder, but it just didn't pan out.
Another chick who should have hit it big is Kari Wuhrer. Was on MTV's Remote Control, and millions of boys all over the globe ran home from school to jack off while watching the show.
I realize she had a decent career in the 90s, mainly B movie fluff though, but had someone in Hollywood pulled the trigger on this girl in 87-88, she would have been massive.

Man, I'd be embarrassed to tell you all how many times I saw Edie Brickell live 1989-1993.
More times than I've seen Guns - let's just put it that way ...
At least you didn't see Martika that many times.. HA!
J/k, anyone remember a song from Taylor Dayne around 29-90?? I looked it up & am surprised she had 3 or 4 hits. Can't believe I liked this one, what a dork.

Yeah, kind of the irony. Lucas for example, a Kerri Green gets buried in the sea, while Hollywood throws everything at Corey Haim. He flamed out within a couple years, and is a notorious has been.
I think the same logic applies to music. How many good artists were looked right past, and the producers on to something else, because they focused, frankly, on people that they shouldn't have.
Doug Aldrich. Amazing guitarist, very talented, but didn't even hit people's radars recently until joining Whitesnake. Aldrich was around then, and did some amazing work with Lion in the 80's. But Lion got sunk down by the fact that it was another melodic rock band in a sea of thousands and thousands. If you weren't the next poison, they didn't give a fuck. Aldrich continued on with Bad Moon Rising in the 90's, still churning out great guitar work... no one paid any attention. The man had to work for 20 years, to catch his big break... joining Whitesnake. In most circles, that's not even a break.
The Martika's of the world were looked past, because they had actual talent. If they weren't slutted up, and the next Madonna... the biz didn't care.
