Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18
I've never really understood the concept of filler. It's often a case of one man's garbage is another man's treasure. Many of the songs people list as filler are some of my favorites. The only song I would skip over in the GNR catalog would be "My World". I used to put Riad on that list until I heard the studio track, and any live version of "Silkworms" I could do without, though they could still win me over with a finished product like they did with Riad.
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18
I'm basing it on the best songs, not the filler. I think the filler on both albums is about the same. I think Estranged and Locomotive are better than Coma and whatever song you want to choose as #2 on UYI I. Add in Civil War and Breakdown and you have 4 top notch songs both lyrically and instrumentally.
Exactly. Filler, what is it anyway? The best work on II blows I away.
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18
i don't know what you'd expect from a gnr board? honestly.
it's my favorite band out of all the music ever recorded/released and i voted based on what i like not what the world thinks it's better.
maybe the other albums are better technically, lyrics wise, whatever. the music on uyi is what "speaks" to me and i'm gonna support those records no matter what you'd put up against them.
i don't understand why people call certain songs filler and when they start dropping names only songs that i like come up. for example, axlin08 named you ain't the first, back off bitch, garden of eden, bad apples, get in the ring and so fine as fillers. i like all those songs. a lot. and the don't cry alt. version, too.
gnr only has 3 great albums (if you judge by popularity). if people would expect those albums to lose on a best albums battle then why would you call gnr your favorite band? aren't you a fan of the music? i mean, if these albums aren't the best, only appetite is left, and i get that many are here because of that album, but the illusions are responsible for a huge amount of fans too.
and i think i'm inclined to consider uyi2 my favorite but it's gonna be a really really hard choice.
Good point. I mean it depends on how you look at it. Is GN'R really your favorite band, if you don't acknowledge UYI I & II from the 90's? Or are you more of a fan if you are willing to acknowledge a different artist.
At the end of the day, remove GN'R from the situation, and the people have named the Black album as the best of the 90's.
But personally, if we're being anti-GN'R right now, i'd like to personally say DIRT was the best albums of the 90's.

Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18
I think the best album of the 90s was probably UYI II, but I would have liked to have seen a best of the 90s tourney without GNR, just to see where it would go. Same with the 80s. AFD is hands down the best album of the 80s in my opinion, but if we do an 80s tourney, I'd like to see it without GNR. It'd be more interesting.
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18
You realize that after saying you hate The Beatles, everything you typed after that was blah, blah, blah, don't you?
You lost the right to opinion after I hate the beatles
yeah, i was expecting that but i don't have to like them just because.
Well regardless of whether My World is a song or not it's on the album and it drags it down. Otherwise I'm gonna dismiss all bad songs and filler on albums as "fucking around" and say they can't be counted when discussing the quality of the album. Doesn't work that way.
i didn't mean it that way. but when you say filler, you say that beacuse of the lyrics, the subject, the music?
because appetite has the same type of lyrics, same type of songs and debatable subjects
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18
But Appetite was good album, the Illusions aren't. Don't read that the wrong way. I love the Illusion albums. Locomotive, Estranged and Double Talkin Jive are some of my favourite GNR songs. BUT just because an album has two of my favourite songs doesn't make the rest of it good. I prefer the Illusions as a whole, as a DOUBLE ALBUM. If we put Use Your Illusion I & 2 up there as an option then yeah it would deserve to win because that's what they basically are. They aren't two seperate albums, they're one big album and when you split them up they are actually both quite weak.
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18
ok, i'm gonna try something
a parralel between appetite and uyi and see what's left out of the illusions to see if they are really that weak separately. of course, all this is a matter of personal opinion.
it's so easy - civil war
nightrain - you could be mine
out ta get me - perfect crime
mr brownstone - don't damn me
my michelle - pretty tied up
think about you - so fine
you're crazy - dead horse
anything goes - double talkin' jive
rocket queen - back off bitch
i didn't try to say one is better than the other but i tried to pair 'em up based on song type, lyrics and subject.
welcome to the jungle - november rain
sweet child o' mine - don't cry
paradise city - knockin' on heaven's door
these last six are not of the same type songs but these are the songs that everyone knows they're gnr, including kohd
so i'm left with:
14 years , yesterdays, get in the ring, shotgun blues, breakdown, locomotive, estranged, don't cry (alt.), my world, right next door to hell, dust n' bones, live and let die, you ain't the first, bad obsession, the garden, garden of eden, bad apples, coma
which is not weak for me as an album.
so, no matter how i'd twist and turn them i can't see the fillers or the weak songs.
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18
I went and thought this through and reorganised the Illusions on to one disc. Here's what I got
Coma
Perfect Crime
Double Talkin Jive
Locomotive
Bad Obsession
Pretty Tied Up
Dust N Bones
Civil War
14 Years
Don't Cry (Original)
November Rain
Estranged
Comes in at 75 minutes so I can't squeeze You Could Be Mine. Just have that track exclusively on the T2 soundtrack and released as a single. Take Back Off Bitch, Yesterdays, The Garden, Bad Apples, Dead Horse, Live and Let Die, Knockin On Heavens Door, Breakdown and Don't Cry (Alt) and put them out as B-Sides and songs for film soundtracks. Then at the end of 1993 instead of The Spaghetti Incident release an album of those B-sides and toss in a few of the good tracks from TSI.
That is what should have happened and would have guaranteed Use Your Illusion would be up their with AFD.
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18
That set is missing far too much, and not that many tracks need to exist for soundtracks.
Especially a set including both Dust N' Bones & 14 Years. NO UYI custom set should have both of those, seeing how they are flip sides of their coins, as songs. Especially when you are leaving DnB & 14yrs on there, while leaving off rockers like YCBM & Dead Horse, and that's not even mentioning the glaring absence of epics like The Garden & Breakdown.
I think is the big problem with the UYI albums. They are like 1-2 songs too much to bring it down to one record. AFD was only 12 trx to begin with. Years ago, I made a custom mix of UYI that was very favored to the epics.
11 trx: UYI
Civil War
Yesterdays
Don't Cry [Original]
Bad Obsession
Breakdown
Locomotive
November Rain
The Garden
Estranged
You Could Be Mine
Coma
That is an epic set, imho. But even still, the glaring omission is Dead Horse.
