Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 18

Just for the record, I prefer UYII to UYI, easily. It's got the far more superior songwriting and playing. The lyrics in Breakdown and Estranged alone have more heart and soul in them than anything on UYI. Slash's playing on Estranged, Civil War and even Get in the Ring is flat-out steallar.

II is more risky, more intelligent, more mature, more original.

I frankly think UYI fails right from the get-go with Right Next Door to Hell. I have never liked Bad Apples, You Ain't the First, Dead Horse and can only tolerate Perfect Crime and Don't Cry.

No competition to me. Coma is hailed as some incredible song, but I don't get it. It's fine, I like it, but I prefer Locomotive hands down. Locomotive has such groove and swing, it's a joy to listen to, and the outro I'll take over some sound bites supposedly coming from an ER.

Finally, one of my faves is So Fine. Always loved it. Don't understand its hate.

There, I said it.

UYI I is better than II for one simple reason. UYI I filler isn't as bad as UYI II filler. That said Black Album filler is better than filler on both those albums. The Black Album is the better of three left.

I'm basing it on the best songs, not the filler.  I think the filler on both albums is about the same.  I think Estranged and Locomotive are better than Coma and whatever song you want to choose as #2 on UYI I.  Add in Civil War and Breakdown and you have 4 top notch songs both lyrically and instrumentally.

UYI I

Live And Let Die
You Ain't The First
Garden of Eden

UYI II

Knockin On Heavens Door
Get In The Ring
Shotgun Blues
So Fine
Don't Cry Alt
My World

Also on UYI I, I could easily do without Right Next Door To Hell, Back Off Bitch, The Garden, Bad Apples and Dead Horse

And could also do without Yesterdays and Breakdown on UYI II

On The Black Album I consider the following filler:

Don't Tread On Me
Through The Never
The God That Failed
My Friend Of Misery
The Struggle Within

However those five songs are all better than the Illusion filler as well as the songs I could also do without. But if we take what's left on the Illusion Records we get this

Dust N Bones
Don't Cry
Perfect Crime
Bad Obsession
Double Talkin Jive
November Rain
Don't Damn Me
Coma
Civil War
14 Years
Pretty Tied Up
Locomotive
Estranged
You Could Be Mine

Which comes in as 14 tracks just over 80 minutes. Now that as an album destroys almost anything from the 90s. But since they're split and surrounded by mediocrity they don't and that is why The Black Album is better than the Illusions.

The bands biggest ever hit this side of the world and a major set piece of almost every show is not filler.

As for the that list of filler on "Metallica", refer to page 1 for that Hefield interview and add "Holier Than Now".

i'll give you live and let die just because i can't stand the beatles as a group or solo

you ain't the first is not one of my top songs but i wouldn't call it a filler

shotgun blues, that's maybe the only song i consider filler as a whole

my world is not a song in its own right. it was just axl fucking around.

all the others you listed i happen to like them, some are top songs in my book, i think they are very good  and they have a reason to be there (no, not to just fill up two discs of material 16 ).

my point is just because some songs sound filler to certain people doesn't mean they are filler for everybody.

Well regardless of whether My World is a song or not it's on the album and it drags it down. Otherwise I'm gonna dismiss all bad songs and filler on albums as "fucking around" and say they can't be counted when discussing the quality of the album. Doesn't work that way.
