Re: The Anthrax Thread
I've not seen one here and as I recently went back and started listening to a lot of their stuff I felt I should start a thread to discuss this great band.
Recently in Anthrax world there's been quite a lot of drama. Their singer Dan Nelson "resigned" because he has came down ill. Nelson however says that he never resigned and is suffering from no illness at all. Their upcoming tour dates were cancelled apart from their commitment to play the Sonisphere Festival in the UK where Ex-Vocalist John Bush returned to perform the show. This all happened within the space of about two days. Things that make you go hmmmmm.
Whilst the apparent "resignation"- read firing- of Dan Nelson is a cold move by the band I am excited by the possibility of Bush coming back into the fold as he is part of my favourite Anthrax lineup and if they were gonna plan a cash grab reunion thing for this Festival they would have went for the Among The Living lineup.
Meanwhile lets watch the video for the 1993 Anthrax classic "Only" described by James Hetfield as "the perfect song"

Re: The Anthrax Thread
Anthrax don't deserve John Bush after how he was treated, but he is my favourite Anthrax singer. He just gave the old songs so much grit than Joey ever could, and I think We've Come For You All is their best album to date.

Woudln't agree with We've Come For You All being best album but Safe Home is a great track.
Re: The Anthrax Thread
I'm a Joey Belladonna nutswinger through and through. In fact, I swing so hard, I've never even bothered to own an Anthrax album after his departure. I don't care if they went in a harder direction. They had a niche market in the Belladonna era, and were a very unique band at the time. Now I will be the first to admit that his era in the band did not age well. Hell, I'm the Man is a cheese sandwich. It was then actually, but nobody was doing that at the time.
I still don't understand how they did not get huge at the time. They were so close yet so far away. EVERYBODY was listening to I'm the Man, but the problem for Anthrax was everybody bought the I'm the Man EP, which was in reality just a single. That should have been on an actual album. Really idiotic way to release that. This "EP" sold more than any of their other albums. Tons of people were also wearing their shirts.
Band was on the verge of exploding, and it was their last chance at hitting the mainstream in a big way. I certainly understand why this band(and others) became so bitter over the years. Right before grunge destroyed everything in its path, a speed metal/thrash movement was gaining traction in the mainstream. I know this is hard to believe with younger rock fans, but it definitely happened. These bands were receiving rotation on MTV at all hours of the day. Hell, I used to even see Sepultura of all bands during the day after school. When I went to that Clash of the Titans tour(AIC, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth), it was jam packed with teenagers. Then a few months later, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam came along and knocked this movement off its pedestal and it never fully recovered.
I guarantee that 1988-91 will be the only point in history when that genre had a chance to take over the world.
Re: The Anthrax Thread
I can understand being a Belladonna nutswinger. Him and Bush kind of signify two different eras of Anthrax. Belladonna being the speed metal/thrash era and then from 93 onwards with Bush it is more of a Grungey Heavy Metal that is much harsher sounding. Both are good in my opinion but I prefer the Bush era because it feels more raw and has definitely aged better. Is the same reason why I prefer the Rust In Peace lineup of Megadeth from the nineties, the songs and albums that band wrote have aged better and sound less cheesy than the eighties speed metal stuff.

i think they went in more of a "Panthrax" direction... after sound of white noise, pantera were the only "real" metal band selling any fucking records.. i think they were trying to ride that wave... they had a similar vibe from stomp 442 thru WCFYA... ( not to mention SEVERAL pantera member appearances on all 3 albums)..
I've never even bothered to own an Anthrax album after his departure. I don't care if they went in a harder direction.
i highly recommend you check some of it out.... i never liked belladonna 'thrax....musically, it was great... vocally, a little cheesy....
Bush immediately gave them the vocal muscle to match the music....
check out " the greater of two evils".. it's a bunch of recently rerecorded pre-bush anthrax songs with bush singing.... just awesome.
bush was the right man for the job. he fit like a glove.
when anthrax decided to ride the "reunion" wave in an attempt to make some bank, they kinda left bush hanging in the wind....
john bush is a proud man... and has a huge hand in what most would consider anthrax's "artistic" peak... they were coming off what many consider to be their best album since SOWN, and were primed to follow that up with another great record when he was told he would have to tour with joey belladonna as part of a reunion tour.... it was a slap in his face
so he walked....
it was at that moment i boycotted anthrax....thy kick john to the curb for joey... they get fucked by joey... and then say "well fuck john... let's try to get corey taylor".... then that didn't work.... they get this new kid..... "oh he's so awesome.."
yeah, ummmm.....nope
nelson sounds like a cross between john bush and phil anselmo....
then they fire his ass.... and call up john...who never shoulda left in the first place... boycott over.
for now...

Re: The Anthrax Thread
^ Yeah, that's exactly how it all went down.
I love The Greater of Two Evils as well. I liken it to as if Metallica went and re-recorded Kill Em All with James Hetfield's now deeper voice and fat modern production.
And that live performance video above just proves that John Bush is still the man for the job.
I suppose the Joey/John debate is a bit like the Vince Neil/John Corabi comparison in Motley Crue. John Corabi made Motley Crue heavier, the same as John Bush did for Anthrax, and some people like that and some people don't.

i think it's closer to a bon scott/brian johnson or a roth/ hagar argument.
the corabi comparison doesn't work... he only sang on one record... and although i, unlike most, consider it an artistic success... it bombed...hard.
bush's voice legitimately fits anthrax's music better than joey's...or neil turbin's... or dan nelson's....
