Re: Slash Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter updates
What Steve wants acknowledgement of is he wants to be referred to as "the real" drummer of Guns N' Roses.
The impression I got is that it used to hurt his feelings when people discounted Steven as the original drummer. He was always sore about being thrown out of the band, particularly given he wasn't the sole problem in the band. Lets face it, being thrown out of GNR for drugs is strange when Slash and Izzy were also heavy drug users, Duff used to drink a lot, and it's been said Axl was often late to writing sessions etc. Steven's position was that he was a problem but that they should have been able to work it out and that ditching him rather than doing that was harsh from his friends. He mentioned that def lepard didnt kick out their drummer even when he has one arm. You can always find a way.
Anyway - that's all debatable - but you can see that given he was never happy about being thrown from the band - it would add salt in the wound for people to act like Matt is the original drummer and discount steven's contribution.
Steven was not only first but plays on their most celebrated album, and the least he deserves is to be remembered for that.
Anyhow - it seemed that he used to direct his anger at that situation toward matt, but that recently matt has been respectful towards steven, and thus steven has realised matt wasn't to blame and is an ok guy.
That's the impession i got from him anyway.
The fact of the matter is, the most replaceable, rotating, non-important position in the history of Guns has been drummer.
Yeah but with a couple of notable exceptions, such as Metallica, that would be true of most bands. While drummers are important as musicans and the overall sound, most fans focus on the singers and guitarists in a band, and can accept replacement drummers without much fuss.
I don't know why Steven takes all of it so extremely personal. He was replaceable, unlike the other guys,
But if you look at it from his position. Sure he was replaceable, but it's not like he was hired in GNR as a job opening in the first place, it's not business for this guy it's his entire life plan, he and slash were childhood friends who had a dream to be in a famous band. They achieved that dream, they got into drugs and it got fucked up, the band was always crazy, but steven was the guy who couldn't come back from it. Of course that's personal, GNR is his biggest sucess, and also his biggest loss.
I'm not saying steven's version is the only version of events. And he definately caused a number of his own problems by being unable to quit drugs.
However, he was important to the original sound, plays on the most famous GNR record and is the first drummer of the band, and for that he deserves his fair credit.
For the record I also think matt is a great drummer and deserves his moments for VR and UYI stuff.
And that's why this is great, because both matt and steven have their place, and it's nice to be able to see them recgonise each other's contributions to the legacy.

i even believe izzy said something to the effect of: we don't sound the same with matt... steven fit us better....

I think it has more to do with his below-par performance on the VR records.

His performance wasn't below par, it was buried in the mix, especially on Libertad. It may not have been AFD to some people, but there is some quality guitar work hidden on that album.

Very true. I know libertad had a lot of scott type songs, but in amongst them is some classic slash vibe...I dont get why people dont at least like the rockier tunes...Let It Roll is a really fun song
