Re: My 90s Mix

Good list. For the record though Falling to Pieces was on 'The Real Thing' which came out in 89. The song became a single in 90 so I guess you could count it for either.

I'm considering doing a similar list but it might be too much stress to cut it down enough.

I missed a big chunk of the early 90s because I had a car with 1 6 disk CD changer on it with AFD, Lies, UYI I, UYI II, and eventually TSI and Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds pretty much stuck in it for 4 years.  I did everything I could to avoid the alternative/grunge movement until I saw Pearl Jam in the 6th row.  I am still experiencing a lot of early 90s music for the first time, so I love seeing these lists.  Gives me some ideas of stuff to check out.

That's the cream of your crop.

I always hated that 500 Miles song.

You got some of those huge mid 90s one hit wonders, and the most glaring absences in that regard are New Age Girl from Deadeye Dick and A Girl Like You from Edwyn Collins.

Probably the most unfortunate thing about the grunge movement. So many resisted it. Hell, the Metal Sludge site is loaded with people who STILL resist it and blame it for "killing off what they love"(hair metal).

I understood the resistance to it because MTV was literally forcing Nirvana down peoples throats and even the fashion. However, Nirvana wasn't all there was and so many people missed out on some great records just because they were pissed Warrant wasn't gonna be on MTV anymore.

It had reached a point where all resistance was futile. The gen x label and rich girls buying used flannel at thrift stores were literally the final nail in 80s culture.

Its amazing that it took off so big. The "in crowd" were wearing what the losers were wearing a year ago, and now it was cool and their taunts rescinded.

I can see why Cobain despised the movement so much. From the nanosecond of it going mainstream, it went against all its principles. To even label it alternative was simply window dressing. If anyone or anything was alternative, it was the third tier hair metal bands trying to hang on for dear life.

Very strange snapshot of our culture.

Funny Russtcb, a few months ago I was trying to work on the Top 100 songs of the 90's. Here's what I had. James I missed those songs, and one more I just thought of was "Damn, I wish I was your lover" by Sophie B Hawkins, I liked that song, might have to squeeze it into Top 25. I had to put Teen Spirit first, I'm not a huge fan of that song in particular, but just the impact it had as it set the tone for the rest of the decade.
