Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 3
To continue a discussion over from Round 2, I have to say I don't see the similarity between Rage and Pantera, besides both being loud and angry with guitar, bass, vocals, and drums (which is something over half of these contenders have in common). If there's deeper similarities I'd like to know about them.
I wouldn't call Pantera political, but I see them as politically opposite of Rage, and whereas Rage never messed with drugs Pantera seems totally filled with a drug influence. Rage comes off strongly with funk and rap styles wheeras Pantera is thrash metal. And Rage was never a glam band. But if I'm wrong or there's a connection I'm missing, let me know.
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 3
I agree they were different, Pantera more metal, Rage more alternative. But on the other hand I can see a comparison in songs like This Love and Killing in the Name Of. The singers shouting over the heavy music.
Probably traces back to similar influences. Suicidal Tendencies probably being one of them. At the same time I wouldn't be surprised if on some subliminal level Pantera was an influence to the Rage guys too. No matter how subliminal (watching headbangers ball on Saturday nights)
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 3
Pantera is no thrash metal.
I think we're talking semantics at this point. While Pantera fans may or may not consider them thrash, its pretty damn close. Other than Cemetery Gates, Cowboys From Hell is borderline thrash. Same with Death Angel, who you should check out if you've never heard them. Should have rode the same wave that Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, and Pantera rode, but I think the general public couldn't get past the "asian dudes playing speed metal??" thing.
Act III is so damn good that it was worthy of making this elimination.
I see your point though. Bands like Sepultura, Exodus, etc. are typical, straight up thrash, but more casual metal fans are not gonna throw all these bands into the various sub genres.

a sampling of the rest....
edit: Wow, just checked wikipedia, and they were supposed to open the Clash of the Titans tour I saw at Arco Arena....
The band was also slated to be the opening act for the "Clash of the Titans" tour featuring Megadeth, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, and Anthrax later in the year (but were ultimately replaced by Alice in Chains, since they were unable to perform).
That sucks. Would have loved to have seen them live at the time, although seeing AIC before they got huge was definitely kick ass.
Suicidal Tendencies was not on the west coast leg of the tour. Don't know where they played, but certainly not Sacramento.
