Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 2
I also don't really consider AIC or Soundgarden grunge. That shit is metal, and thats what it would have been called if they weren't from Seattle. Hell, Soundgarden WAS metal until MTV decided to start with giving all those bands the grunge label. Yeah AIC and especially Soundgarden veered into many directions, but that doesn't really change anything.
When I saw AIC in 91, they were opening for Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth.

Soundgarden is good in my book. I use to listen to them and then stopped for years. Just now am I rediscovering most of their material. And I def agree with AIC.. They were actually the best band to come from the Seattle movement. Layne was the real deal.

Obviously there are those who hate grunge, hate pop punk, hate industrial, hate true metal (I would say I hate hard metal like Pantera), hate prog rock... so looking at that list, is there anyone that could really dislike Rage Against the Machine? I could see them as a dark horse winner because I think everyone can find something in that first album, even if it's nobody's absolute favorite.

I hate Rage Against the Machine. I didnt like it then, dont like it now.
Agreed though on AIC and Soundgarden. They were no bullshit metal. Listen to "Outshined" and tell me its anything other than metal!

how can one like RATM's first record yet hate Vulgar Display Of Power?
there's just as many "head' bobbin"" beats... guitar heroics.. lyrics with an awareness of society and tons of crunch....
i mean... if you don't like it... fine
but hate is a strong word... if you're not a fan of hard metal, that's cool...
but most people lump that record into a certain category without having heard it... it's way too easy to listen to the songs everyone knows and miss some of the lesser known stuff that may actually surprise you....
cowboys from hell is iron maiden/judas priest with some van halen/hair metal sensibilities...
far beyond driven is a violent, ferocious, unrelenting attack of grinding guitars, and tripped out, spitting venomous vocals....
.. everything after that sorta followed that mold with an increasing amount of "redneck" peppered in..
it's difficult for one to get an idea of what VDOP sounds like from listening to these other albums..
the reason VDOP is sooo revered is because most pantera fans would agree it was their finest moment.. a truly original album.. and worthy of universal praise... from metal fans and non- metal fans alike..
but alot of non-metal fans hear "walk" or "mouth for war" and they think they have a pretty good idea of what the rest of the album sounds like.
they're wrong...
.. some have actually said that this record may have been truly responsible for nu metal.....
Re: Best album of the 90s elimination- Round 2
Green day...i can't beleive it's on this list.
I'm more shocked by what's not on the list(Alanis, Achtung Baby) than I am by what's on it.
If Dre was gonna get a first round knockout so bad, I would have preferred we squeeze Alanis into the list to see how she stacks up against all this metal.
Whoa whoa, wait a second... I just noticed, Achtung's not on the list??! Ouch. Certainly belonged on over Dookie, what happened there? Can you make an executive decision on that one, entering it in?
Anyway, Monkeychow, I think GD made it in only thru a 3 way play-in poll against Foo fighters & I forget who else. They must have won that entrance poll. I'm indifferent to it, certainly not the best album, but not one of the worst. I might rank it around 20th, myb a little lower if I really counted them all up, but it'd prob be around 30th at lowest. So I don't care that much that it's in or not.

PaSnow it's time to take off your flannel and live a little. I can not stand grudge. It just doesn't tickle my fancy at all. I can't relate to the music and how it's offered up. Nirvana might have been the worst thing for rock and roll as a whole when you look back at it. Overrated doesn't begin to explain it. Cobain was not that amazing. Shot himself and he became a saint. When the drummer was the most talented guy in the band. Some songs are alright but no where near the level people make them out to be.
Chillax. I was just kidding. But by voting it off now you are putting Dookie & STP among several others ahead of it. Which personally I do find a bit mind boggling.
Also, FWIW, Cobain wasn't some musician who the shot himself & was then "sainted". He was from the get-go the "face of grunge". Was he the most talented? No. When Rolling Stone wanted a cover photo did they prob want Kurt first, then if not, Vedder, Cornell, or Staley? Yes, probably. I'm not saying he was better than them, but as for populairty he always was the most famous of the grunge acts. So some people distort how his suicide escalated his fame.
if courtney love never had him killed, would people still put the record on a pedestal?
probably not....
I know you said you were a "pre-teen" when it was out, I was 19. Let me tell you, Teen Spirit changed music with one swift stomp of a distortion pedal. That album was already on the pedestal in January 1992, regardless of their future.
