According to a new interview with Scott, they are getting around one song done a day, with vocals and harmonies included. And he also said they are gearing for a Christmas release and will be touring around that time.
Neemo, the interview also mentioned the last tour being a GH tour, and they are looking forward to playing new material live.
STP have always been known for playing new songs live before they are released.

Ok. So, in addition to being a hardcore STP fan, I am also a dj for a rock station. Yesterday when I was in the studio I saw a paper, which I'm not sure where it came from but it looked official, that had upcoming single release dates for artists. It had STP listed for September 29th. Now, I'm not saying by any means that this is official. It's probably just a tentative release date just like album release dates are. Nonetheless IF it does happen we are just a few months away from new STP!

STP bassist Robert DeLeo spoke to a group of fans near his tour bus before STP’s July 8th show at the PNC in Cincinatti and he let some fans listen to a brief sample of STP’s new album (just the music, no vocals). One fan described the music they heard from the song sounding like, “a faster paced Down” so it sounds like there will be some heavy material on the album. STP’s webmaster Matt also hinted on STP’s BBS that he has heard some of the new material, saying, “New music= amazing.” DeLeo also said the band are shotting for a November/December release date, depending on whenever Scott Weiland’s vocals/lyrics are all finished. This coincides with Scott Weiland’s quote in a recent interview that STP’s sixth studio album will most likely be out by Christmas. He claimed in the same interview (which took place in June) that he had the lyrics written for 10 songs.
Robert also told the fans that there are plans in the works for ANOTHER STP release already to follow up the sixth album, Weiland also mentioned in an interview last month with ArtistDirect that STP would “have some extra songs ready for the next record.” So it sounds like STP’s sixth album will not be their final one.

great show last night i'll upload some pics later on, and i'll let ya know the setlist, but they played some older obscure stuff....sin, loungefly...pretty much the whole core album
here is a video thats up on youtube already opening song, its pretty much my POV so it might have been the dude standign next to us who was filming with his PSP...it was a pretty rough gig, lotsa pushing but we were 3 peopel from the rail
as you can see from the vid, they are firing on all cylinders, scott mentioned new material about 3 times but they never did play new stuff

Interesting setlist. Definitely a few key tracks missing, and I was always surprised that Heaven & Hot Rods never became a fan favorite. That is a killer tune.

Yes it is. I love that song.
Weird setlist for sure. But they've always been ones to change it up all the time. I'm surprised they aren't demoing any new ones yet.

i thought the set list was pretty sweet, though i kinda wish they woulda played big bang baby, days of the week and dumb love, but all in all it was pretty good IMO...did you guys watch the vid? the guys look and sounded amazing 
I loved VR but Scott really doesn't belong anywhere except fronting this band
