Re: Michael Jackson's This Is It Discussion
He's in bad shape. Everyone that's running around with 'vintage' Michael right now are full of crap.
No shit. He obviously cant dance all that well anymore, and looks like everything has been slowed down to cater to him.
He's also not singing, or at least he wasn't in that clip I watched. So the backbone of his comeback was gonna be lip synching and slow motion dance routines.
I also agree with you that this tour would have imploded several shows into the tour. The media(and some fans) would have crucified him.

Again it's ridiculous to come to the conclusion that he can't dance anymore after watching a 90 second clip. Stop it already. I'm sure a 50 year old Michael Jackson couldn't dance as well as he could 15 years ago but let's not get carried away here.

If anything needs to "stop", its this bullshit with people acting like he was on the verge of an 80s Aerosmith type comeback. Before he died, everyone knew his career was burnt toast. After death, people know his career was burnt toast. This glorification garbage doesn't change those facts.
The guy rode around in a wheelchair half the time for fucks sake, yet you think some spectacular 50 show extravaganza was gonna go off without a hitch?

I agree to a point. I personally think it would have been a clusterfuck of a concert series. BUT its Michael Jackson, it would have sold like hot cakes and alot of people would have went to see him and loved it. Not necessarily my thing, but I'm sure alot of people would have enjoyed it.
edit: I just wanted to clarify a little bit more. Although I personally think the concert would have made a shitload of money, there is no way in hell it would have led to a career resurgence.

Personally, I'm not sure about that, to my ears a lot of the pop sounds of the 80s have slowly been returning just re-freshed a little. Meanwhile he was nearing the ark where he should be getting cool again - like a person gets famous, it's hip to like them, then it becomes hip to dislike them because they're so "last decade" or whatever, then as time passes, if they had talent in the first place, they often then get viewed with a kind of reverence. Like how AC/DC are being welcomed back kind of thing.
If these concerts went off ok...then that's 1,000,000 UK fans who just saw MJ and had a good night doing so. Especially if the media is suportative and reported it favourably. Then all he has to do is release a new song, if its got a good hook and some good producers, then next thing you know...he's back in the game.
Not saying it would happen for sure. But it's not impossible either.

Re: Michael Jackson's This Is It Discussion
I have to disagree with this one (there wouldn't have been a comeback) also.
The fact of the matter is the guy sold out FIFTY shows in just a few HOURS...how many people do you think could do that today?
His record sales actually started going up (although not like after his death) once he announced his "This Is It' tour. I DO think it was plausable he would make a comeback. For one thing MUSIC SUCKS today. For another I think people "secretly" hoped for a return. The car crash trance only holds you for so long until you want to see some light.
I do agree with James about the unlikeliness the 50 shows would go off without a hitch. The sad reality is his death would have very likely occured during this tour had it not happened now.
Re: Michael Jackson's This Is It Discussion
I don't think anyone will question the financial success of those shows. They were selling out. It was billed as the final tour. This wasn't AFD rehash vol. 4 playing to echoes in arenas. The venues would have been packed like sardine cans.
What can be called into question was his ability to pull this off. He hadn't toured in ages, hadn't released an album in eight years, was a complete dope feign, and was so frail he needed wheelchair assistance.
Not trying to burst bubbles, but people needing IV drips of dope while riding around in a wheelchair don't usually complete successful sold out tours.
He wasn't making a legitimate comeback. It was a final dose of nostalgia to fill up a few bank accounts. While he may have envisioned some sort of Thriller style resurgence, even in a vicodin haze he would have known it was just a pipe dream.
