U.S. porn industry had 16 unpublicized HIV cases

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - There have been 16 unpublicized cases of HIV among porn actors since a 2004 outbreak made headlines, Los Angeles health officials said on Friday, a disclosure that was likely to raise new concerns about AIDS in the adult film industry.
The revelation came in response to a request for information by the Los Angeles Times, which reported that an unidentified actress had tested positive last week.
The adult film industry had said it was the first case since the 2004 outbreak, the Times reported.
In fact 22 performers have tested positive, including last week's case and five in 2004, according to the numbers released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Since the 2004 outbreak, in which a male star infected three actresses and another performer also tested positive, the $12-billion-a-year U.S. adult film industry has required regular testing by porn actors.
Most of that testing is conducted by the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation, which issues work certificates to the performers who test negative.
The unnamed actress first tested positive for HIV on June 4 and worked the following day before taking second and third tests, according to the Times.
The second test was also positive and results of the third were pending, according to AIM Healthcare.
"AIM Healthcare has never been cooperative with us and our investigations," Dean Fryer, a spokesman for the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health, told the paper, adding that the clinic had refused to name the actress or her employer.
In a statement on its website, AIM Healthcare said it was still awaiting "final confirmation" that the actress was positive for HIV.
The porn industry, which is largely centered in the San Fernando Valley suburbs of Los Angeles, includes about 200 production companies that employ about 1,200 actors, the Times said.
Since 2004, 1,357 porn performers have tested positive for gonorrhea and 15 for syphilis, according to county health data cited by the Times.

Wow. There needs to be some agency that monitors this. Not advocating government intervention(yet), but that is a huge health hazard. Those people all basically share one another, and while I am not a porn freak, I remember how they used to go to colleges and things like that to do films, which obviously exposes even more people to it.

This is even more nuts though... A THOUSAND!! In only 5 years, ugghhh, they must all have it..
As for the porn industry, yeah, it's fucked up she worked the day after. Why would they allow someone to continue to work. Why not make them sit until they pass 2 more tests.. That's just wrong & bad logic. Disgusting actually. Funny because I remember from the last scare (2004 I guess) and they all insisted how safe it was, and they were all tested. Well yeah, but you can work a couple days even after testing positive.
Way to be cautious. Then again, it's porn we're talking about. It's like drug dealers killing drug dealers, not really a crime.

That's massively fucked (lol) that she continued to work after testing positive. so disrespectul to her partners.
I'd be interested to know the community rates for the other STDs.

Regardless Snow, it's still sad. Many of the girls in the business aren't even in their mid-20's, and yet could be doomed to die of AIDS, because they were legal prostitute for a living.
I know it's prostitution, but it's still sad. So much life to live, and that's how they chose to live it.
Certaintly puts a difference perspective on porn. Some of the hottest scenes, are the most gross, and people forget how disease-ridden these people are because of it.
Like anything you do to excess in life, it'll come back to get you.
Smoke too much = lung cancer
Drink too much = liver cancer
Eat too much = coronary disease

This part doesn't really surprise me as they get paid per scene, right? So if she's not working--especially in this economy--she's not getting paid.

I have a medical question to ask here: Why is there such a large discrepancy between positive tests for gonorrhea and syphillis? Do they take antibiotics--or any medication--to prevent this disease from being spread beforehand or something?
