Re: Tonight Show with Conan
I've never understood why Martin Short hasn't gotten one of these late night shows. It isn't like he's busy, he's a great performer, and a pretty decent writer himself.
Coulda sworn he did have a short-lived show at one point and it was terrible. Similar to Chase: great performer, shitty writer.
EDIT: there were TWO shows of his that died quickly, one from 1994 and one from 1999. I remember the one from '99 but I was too young to notice back in '94.

Re: Tonight Show with Conan
Jiminy Glick (Martin Short character, for those that don't know) was always pretty funny. Primetime Glick was one of the funniest shows in the couple years it was on.
Re: Tonight Show with Conan
I disagree with Short being a shitty writer. His humor is a bit offset, similar to Conan's, and I think alot of audiences love or hate it. Even now, NBC still feels they are taking a risk with O'Brien on The Tonight Show, with his type of humor. We aren't even out of the first week with Conan on the Tonight Show, and as someone who enjoyed Conan on Late Night, I can tell his humor is being streamlined. Some jokes have come across as Leno material, and it seems Conan didn't even know how to deliver them. Hopefully that gets straightened out.
I think Short is the same way. Funny guy, great performer, and funny writer, you just either get it, or don't, and alot don't.
Like China said, Primetime Glick was a hilarious show, and very short-lived on Comedy Central. The main funny part of the show, is it was complete satire. It was a total sendup OF the talk show format. That's what made it so funny, and Jiminy Glick is a great character too, although Short did have a tendency to overplay the 'fat schtick' at times, I will admit.
There was one other show I remember, I want to say from the late-90's, called "The Martin Short Show", which was not a late night concept or satire, but in fact a straight-forward, 'morning coffee' show in syndication, which Short was ALL wrong for. The show did feature Short skits, but it didn't work for morning drive people, and Short didn't get the same kind of guests. You can't run a show forever on booking Don Rickles.
What I mean is actually giving short a late night concept, like The Tonight Show or Late Night, with a staff of writers and his skits, and seeing what happens. Maybe they did that with the 1994 show, but I missed that one.

Re: Tonight Show with Conan
I am stuck watching Letterman right now because my local NBC affiliate is running a telethon. All I can say is wow, Dave just isn't funny. I used to think he and Leno were at least somewhat amusing but the more I watch them, the more I realize how lame they are.
Re: Tonight Show with Conan
I use to watch Leno. I would tune into Dave if I liked the guests. But I was always a Conan fan and he continues to do a good job and it's a good fresh look for late night. I think he is going to be sitting in that chair for a very long time.
Re: Tonight Show with Conan
Yes, I think he'll also be there for a long time.
Jay took the standard, safe route, and made alot of money, AND beat Letterman in the ratings. Good for him... but NO ONE will remember him years from now.
They'll remember David Letterman & Conan O'Brien.
