I guess I totally disagree then. I don't think they were making fun of GNR. About best marketing I saw for the album was from Dr. Pepper. Plus, as far as everyone I know is concerned, Dr. Pepper made good on the free pop.

I don't think they were making fun of GNR.  I think the guy who came up with the idea was a fan and had good intentions.  But the way they carried out the promotion absolutely blew huge donkey balls.  I tried many times to get my free Dr. Pepper and it never worked, and I know I wasn't alone.  I told friends of mine, who were far bigger Dr. Pepper fans then GNR fans and they were pissed when they didn't get their free can of soda.  Overall, not a very good reflection on GNR.  I don't blame them for being upset.  It was a good idea, piss poor execution.

This says it all. Dre embraces Dr. Pepper's involvement, by using them to promote his long-awaited album.

Axl turns around and sues FREE PUBLICITY.

And people are giving Trent a hard time for calling Axl an idiot?

It's not about free publicity...it's about people controling your brand's image without your permission and potentially harming it by association.

(and while i'll achnowledge that perhaps Axl does harm his own brand at times, that doesn't make it ok for others to do so. If you want to key-up your car, that doesn't mean I can come scratch the shit out of it as well)

Is dr pepper the image the band wants to be associated with? What if it was tampons? or child's toys or painkillers? or car oil? It's not right for a product to attach itself to another product without strategic planning, payments, and involvements from both sides and done consentually.

It wasn't right...but Axl seemed to take it ok...but then when they fucked up their "free" promotional offer anyway...he got pissed off and had every right to IMO.
