You have to adapt or get left behind.

How many 45 year old (or however old Slash is) guitarists get invited to AI?  Singers?  Plenty of older singers have been on.  On the flipside though, they also had Quentin Terantino on, so maybe this isn't all that good...

What have Taylor Hicks, Clay Aiken, Fantasia Barino, or Ruben Studdard done lately?

Sure the show has yielded some stars.  So has MTV's The Real World.  That doesn't make it right.

Difference is the stars from AI have a discernable talent. When someone from the Real World wins an Oscar or sells over 10 million records worldwide, then you'll have a point.

Let's see someone from American Idol win a tag team championship belt in the WWE.

Seriously though, record sales don't automatically equal talent.  Carrie Underwood is cute and a big country star.  The country fans embrace anything, wasn't Jessica Simpson accepted after her failed pop career?  Kelly Clarkson was successful until she tried to do things "her way", then she went back to Clive Davis when that failed.  Jennifer Hudson I'll give you, but she didn't even win her season probably because she wasn't hot enough.  Didn't have the "look" of an idol.  Had to be, she obviously had the talent.  The show is one big popularity contest and for the most part is a joke.

That's how I feel, and I'm sticking to it.

Carrie Underwood, as far as music goes, is really the only success story to come out of AI. Clarkson had a fleeting moment of success, but like you mentioned she faded off when she started trying to do it her way. Hudson's only claim to fame is an Oscar, which really means absolutely nothing. I hear people point that out all the time, and just think of this fact... how many Oscar winners, win, and you never ever hear from them ever again? That is Jen Hudson. The rest never were ever significant.

Country fans embrace anything however, that statement, is MASSIVELY untrue. If ANY genre in the business, is more assholeish, exclusive, and full of themselves thinking they are gods of music... it's country... and it's usually the shittiest too. Jessica Simpson's country jaunt was a MASSIVE flop, and even Sony Nashville as told Sony HQ they don't want her back on their label, her album was a bomb that bad in the country world.

So her country days, and most likely career, is done.

Idol is a 'one season wonder' show, with only one success story. I'm actually shocked people even still cover and follow Kelly Clarkson, but even with that, it's not to the extent of a Carrie Underwood.

who cares about the product that has come out of idol? the fact is that a large portion of the US/Canadian public watches the show...its good publicity to apear on something that gives that much exposure..well if you want your product to be commercially successful

this idol appearance is nothing more than a favor for a freind (Simon) and a bit of PR for his forth coming solo disk

I don't think people should be anti slash for doing this.

However..

I'm not a fan of the genre as I see AI and similar shows as nothing more than karokee contests. It seems to me that what they do is find the people who are the best at doing COVERS, and then ask them to be creative and give them record contracts. Why would that work? That a person is good at singing others songs doesn't mean they will write good things, and likewise in a sence finding someone who can sing good in a variety of styles just turns into "jack of all trades master of none". What of people like Brian Johnson of Ac/Dc who sound awesome in one style - his hardrock screach...he'd be kicked out when he sang a robbie williams ballad badly. It's a stupid idea IMO. So i dont like the concept.

But that said, this is where the industry is at, it's what the market is doing. Slash is a professional musican at an eliete level, and it makes sence for him to get involved in the current trends of the market. It's his job.

Well considering a good 80% of the artists today don't write their own stuff...

Another thing I think is wrong with the industry 14

But it's the different style thing that's messed up more.

Like I think beyonce sounds great doing the style she sings in. But would she be good fronting metallica? James sounds cool in metallica, but does he work in destiny's child? Seems to me that to win a show like idol you have to be average in every genre.

Kelly Clarkson had more than a single album's worth of success. Her last album debuted at #1 and had a #1 single. It's gone Gold in the US, a major accomplishment these days, and it's only been out like 2 months I think.

Anyways, I'm pretty excited for Slash to be on AI, and I may watch the whole show.
