Re: M.I.A. 2009 tour dates being announced
She was added to the Coachella line up a few weeks ago, and apparently the gods were listening to my prayers.....
The second annual Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival has snagged quite a collection of bands and artists for three days of August fun in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, including Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Beastie Boys, Incubus and Black Eyed Peas.
But wait, there’s more.
Also on the lineup for August 28, 29 and 30 is M.I.A., Jason Mraz, Ween, The Mars Volta, Thievery Corporation and Modest Mouse, but that’s just scratching the surface.
Also expect Band Of Horses, TV On The Radio, The Dead Weather, Atmosphere, Tom Jones, Silversun Pickups, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, The National, and this week’s Pollstar HotStar, Brett Dennen, to drop a few names.

M.I.A. 2009 Tour Dates(so far):
April 18th Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California
August 28th-30th Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival Golden Gate Park San Francisco
Will update this thread as more dates are announced.

Looks like Coachella isn't just a "one off" like expected. Coachella is in a week, and this festival is four months away. Obviously that dead space between festivals is about to be filled with either more festival dates, or more than likely another club tour.
I'll definitely be at this show.
Re: M.I.A. 2009 tour dates being announced
MIA show in Detroit = Russ is there.
There's certain cities she ALWAYS hits on tour, and luckily for the two of us, two of those cities are San Francisco and Detroit(and New York of course).
Massively pumped for this and its months away. God only knows what she's gonna bring to the table on this tour. When she tours, she always plays a heavy setlist of new material. She's between albums this time(a first in her touring career), so we may see her "road testing" new material. Well, I'm hoping. Nothing wrong with those 2007 setlists, but I want to hear new music.
I got Santigold and MIA lined up for 2009. Now we just need GNR to get their asses in gear.
The crowds are gonna be interesting because I have not seen her in concert since right before Paper Planes became a huge craze. Gonna be tons of casual fans at these shows now instead of clubs filled with hardcores going to multiple dates.
Re: M.I.A. 2009 tour dates being announced
INDIO, Calif. (AP) — M.I.A. gave the main stage at Coachella her best shot. It just didn't work out.
After a strong start, a few hiccups, and a somewhat listless finale, the Grammy-nominated new mom declared at the end of her hour-long set in the desert that "next time I'm back in the tent."
"I want to be in the sweat," she said.
M.I.A. had performed twice in smaller tents at the music festival, in its tenth year and one of the nation's most prestigious. She noted earlier, "I really don't know how to bring it on the main stage." And her live show staples — climbing on speakers, dancing body-to-body with the crowd — didn't quite fit the new digs. When she tried to bring some of the audience onstage Saturday night, security guards thwarted most fans.
M.I.A. ended up on a platform above the crowd performing "Bird Flu," and asked when it was over: "Can we get some order in the place? My baby's waiting." She gave birth to a son in February, a few days after the Grammys.
The Killers took the main stage to close the evening. The Las Vegas-based group, who began with their most recent single "Human," appeared far more comfortable in the setting.
Wearing a black No Limit Records T-shirt, sneakers and jeans with Day-Glo green lining, M.I.A. performed songs from her two most recent albums and gave up the spotlight to Baltimore-based protege Rye Rye for a song. While she moved alongside Day-Glo-clad dancers for a lively opening number, she stood stiffly at other times behind a podium adorned with microphones as if at a news conference.
Roaming into the audience with help of a piggyback ride, she finished with crowd favorite "Paper Planes," lifted to hit status by appearances in "Pineapple Express" and "Slumdog Millionaire."
But the British-born, Sri-Lankan-bred rapper pushed back against Hollywood. She slyly referenced her status as Coachella replacement for Amy Winehouse, who canceled due to visa trouble, by singing "They tried to make me do the Oscars. I said no, no, no." And, she noted, "I want to let you know that just 'cuz I did the Grammys, it doesn't mean I've gone all sold out."
Though she wasn't embracing Hollywood, some of its regulars certainly wanted to be around for her. Zac Efron was seen ducking out of the fest's VIP area in the afternoon Saturday, and Paris Hilton posed for pictures with her new boyfriend during Thievery Corporation's popular main stage set just before M.I.A.
Also performing Saturday were Joss Stone, TV On The Radio, Fleet Foxes — who apologized to fans after suffering repeated technical problems — and Travis Barker and DJ AM, who had the dance tent crowd roaring at their drum-assisted remixes of pop hits.
Exact figures weren't released but crowds at the three-day festival appear to have more than doubled the approximate 75,000 population of this community southeast of Palm Springs. Police reported 17 arrests Saturday and fire officials said two people had been taken to hospitals. Temperatures, climbing throughout the fest, were expected to hit the high 90s on Sunday, which features the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Public Enemy, My Bloody Valentine and the Cure.

Her performance isn't getting good reviews from the few sites where I've seen the performance mentioned, which is the exact opposite of last year's performance where she had a massive buzz and stole the show. Haven't seen a set list pop up yet, but its safe to assume nothing new was performed. Also sounds like she's not too comfortable as a "main eventer", and the complaints I've seen at music sites are exactly that---'why was this artist on the main stage'? While Paper Planes got huge, that one track doesn't warrant top billing and if huge portions of the crowd aren't into it, no point in her putting herself in that predicament.
A bit disappointing that Paper Planes is now going to be the encore since it became a huge hit. If she's gonna get lukewarm responses from a general audience and continue to be near the top of the bill at upcoming festivals, then she should be opening the show with that track to get a "pop" from the audience which might sustain the momentum for the rest of the show.
Oh well. Cant wait to see this 2009 show for myself in 4 months.
Re: M.I.A. 2009 tour dates being announced
M.I.A. performed at Coachella on April 18, 2009. See the M.I.A. Coachella video and photos here. The Sri Lankan rapper performed several of her signature hits, including ‘Galang,’ ‘Pull Up the People,’ ‘Bingo,” XR2,’ ‘Boyz,’ and her chart topping hit single ‘Paper Planes’ which closed out the show.
The performance at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, marked the Sri Lankan rapper’s first live performance since the 2009 Grammy Awards when she performed nine months pregnant on her due date, alongside fellow rappers Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and T.I. on the latter’s Swagga Like Us.
The birth of her son, Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman whose father is Benjamin Bronfman (a.k.a. Benjamin Brewer), followed a few days thereafter. Both were in attendance at the M.I.A. Coachella concert.
Although M.I.A. has performed previously at Coachella this was her first performance on the main stage. She was a last minute replacement for Amy Winehouse was previously scheduled to perform. It was a glow in the dark performance with a DJ and backup dancers. M.I.A. brought on up-and-coming rapper Rye Rye as a special guest.
The rapper has achieved worldwide fame with the her chart topping single, ‘Paper Planes.’ which received a 2009 Grammy nomination. She has also achieved notoriety for her Oscar nominated song ‘O… Saya’ from Slumdog Millionaire which she performed in collaboration with legendary Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman (who went on to win two Oscars, for the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack and son Jai Ho).
"Thanks for having me on the main stage…They tried to make me do the Oscars, I said no, no, no. They tried to make me do the Oscars, I said no, no, no!” she sang in reference to Amy Winehouse, whom she filled in for after the troubled singer pulled out last month. M.I.A. had been invited to perform “O… Saya,” her Oscar-nominated song from Slumdog Millionaire, at this year’s Academy Awards.
