VAN HALEN-Themed 'Guitar Hero' Game Appears To Be Moving Forward - Apr. 18, 2009
Kris Pigna of 1UP.com reports that rumors of an all-VAN HALEN-themed Guitar Hero game have been around for a little while now, but Activision has yet to confirm it. Now, as is often the case, it looks like a ratings board beat them to it.

The German Voluntary Monitoring Organization of Entertainment Software (Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle) has posted a listing (see below) for "Guitar Hero Headlining Van Halen" for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. While this does seem to confirm that VAN HALEN is next in line for the Guitar Hero treatment (following AEROSMITH and METALLICA), it does also seem odd that Activision has stuffed the word "headlining" into the title for what seems like no particular reason.

The biggest questions center around which band personnel will appear in the game. There's no word on whether original bassist Michael Anthony will be excluded from the game play in favor of current bass player Wolfgang Van Halen, and it's also unknown whether the game avatar of singer David Lee Roth will be joined by Sammy Hagar or even Gary Cherone.

Guitarist Eddie Van Halen recently said in an interview that work on a new VAN HALEN album could begin later this year. The band is also rumored to be considering a summer stadium tour with GUNS N' ROSES.

I'm guessing VH is considering including nothing past 1984 on the GH, so to appease Hagar & Anthony fans, they're not going to deem it straight up a GH: VH, because the "VH IV" band is what's going to be represented.

They also might be considering re-records.

Just a guess. You know how egotistical Eddie is.

If they want this to sell like hotcakes, Hagar wont be included. Yeah I know Van Hagar was popular and had some hits, but the real Van Halen(minus Anthony) is back, and Van Hagar is as relevant as a pet rock.

Honestly I like Van Hagar just as much as the Roth days.
Probably comes from how much I dislike Roth though.

Although Van Hagar is irrelevant right now, I think any GH: VH would sell what it would sell whether it's Roth, Hagar, or both. Just that brand name alone means money.

I personally feel that it should encompass VH's history, which includes some absolutely great, and beautiful songs from the Hagar era. They did the ballads right, bar none. However, the rockers are all Roth-era and it is GH, which means more rocker-heavy.

I just think, if the current lineup is serious about a true comeback, with new material, you're right, Hagar-era should be ignored. This would be a great opportunity for the Dave/Eddie/Wolfie/Alex band to showcase the band through the CGI band, maybe record some remixes, and showcase a few new tracks, and possibly a future album.

Ignoring the Hagar era presents alot of business opportunities for the future. But if there are no real plans other than "talk", it would be more complete, and true for the fans, as well as financially successful to include Roth & Hagar.

Either way, Michael Anthony won't be let within 50 miles of this thing.
