Re: Biggest Hollywood bombs of the last 25 years
James, good on ya mentioning Cutthroat Island. I was going to mention it myself. It was always cited as proof that Pirates of the Caribbean would be a flop. The big wigs at Disney were terrified after spending $140-150 million on the first Pirates movie that it would have a similar fate to Cutthroat Island, especially given their homophobic fear that Johnny Depp's flamboyant character was "too gay" for public consumption. They were dead wrong and the rest is history (roughly $2.7 billion worldwide box office for the 3 Pirates movies).

...and almost every person i've ever talked to that liked the Pirates movies, were there for Depp.
Correct. The sequels would have flopped if he wasn't in them and the original surely would have flopped as well if his performance wasn't as great as it was. The word of mouth on that movie was incredible. Disney was paranoid as hell about it until they showed it to test audiences and the test audiences went crazy over Depp's performance. It's an iconic character and I believe it's 90% responsible for the financial success of that franchise. The other 10% is the summer blockbuster/CGI aspect.

Yeah, 'cause we've all seen how Orlando Bloom & Keira Knightly's careers have exploded since those films...
Even more proof that Depp = Money
Look at 21 Jump Street. Of all shows. Not necessarily Emmy-worthy and the DVD sets were a success story and all seasons of the show were released. They pimped the hell out of Depp, even on the last season which he was not in.
Johnny Depp is practically a household brand name at this point.
