Before I had a car I had a phone, and needed it because of afterschool stuff whose end time was not always listed or guaranteed. There aren't pay phones around anymore, if you didn't have a cell phone in that situation you were going to walk home.

I think a better plan would be get them the phone but not allow texting. Either get a phone that doesn't have that option, or don't include it in the plan.

As for Twitter, I don't see why regular people should have one but I do watch a few (Bill Gould, Trent Reznor) who use it to keep in touch with fans.

The problem is is that the only way to restrict it on a phone is by setting that function to need a password. My parents used my birthdate as a password for everything for years. Finally wised up when I got tired of it and told them I knew that.

Another problem is if you don't include it on your plan the phone company charges like 99 cent for each message, recived and sent.

And also it's not TOO hard now a days to text in class. i can send at least 5 a class

My kids aren't gonna have a phone in their room, their own cell phones, TVs in their rooms, video game systems in their rooms, computers with internet in their rooms. Maybe I'm a dick. But I'm gonna know what my kids are doing.

you can do all that but they gonna eventually hate that and theyre going to go out and smoke and do things like that you can't control everything every kid has done something bad you cant exepect them to be jesus

Just curious, is it something that's pretty common?  In just about every class do you see kids texting (or yourself) during class, or is it more like once a day or few times a week. What are the repurcussions if you get caught? Do they take your phone for the rest of class, or goto the principals office?

its like once a day thing depends of who its doing it and if you get caught they say you to put the phone off and that you put on the bag but sometimes (very rare)  they take your phone for the rest of class at least thats what happens in my school

that could seem stupid but it isnt, if is not that hard to do it and if they caught you nothing happens then its not fun then nobody do it, its pretty smart...

Sometimes my phone gets taken off sometimes I'm told to put it in my bag. Although I'll be honest when out and about having a phone is useful. Perhaps only give them their phone when they are going out with their friends or something.

Everyday thing with everything at my school. The teachers are supposed to take your phone but depending on what teacher it is they just tel you to put it away or take it until the end of the class. and also the policy at my school is that they take the phone, put it in a bag or envelope with your name and then you have to go to student affairs with a photo ID to get it back. And honestly this doesn't affect my grades and i'm in I.B. and AP classes.

Depending on which class it is I'll send anywhere from 20 to no messages in that class. and 300 texts a day isn't alot. especially not when you consider the 5 min you generally get in between classes and the 45 minute lunch break we get.

And you have to consider the time she rides a bus, if she does, thats about an hour a day

O and btw in just 6 days i've sent 1023 texts. And I haven't really been texting much this week due to some friends of mine(the main ones I text at least) that live in a different county being on spring break
