Vocalise, that's a great piece of music right there. I'd love to see a Slash solo album without vocalists, and that is why. It could be beautiful, a masterpiece, but with some of the people singing on it that have been rumored, it's gonna be so watered down.

Agreed.  I was really hoping he would do an instrumental album or two.  I would love to hear his guitar work as standalone music.

Matchbox 20 was actually pretty big before Smooth.  Their first album is probably their best.  Smooth took them to a new level, but I'd bet their first album outsold CD, even when considering the different eras.

That Matchbox album from 1996 or 1997 sold probably close to 10 million albums.  It was huge and had several top 10 hits, biggest hits were 3 am and Push...

I'm pretty sure that Matchbox Twenty CD went diamond. It's a really good album. Long Road (?) probably being my favorite.

Will this outsell CD?

I wouldn't underestimate Slash's popularity. He's gone from being a guitar hero to "younger generation computer game" guitar hero. So he is still really popular with many people, both old and young.

And I think if any of the tracks get picked up by radio and gets some airplay Slash could get some Santana type of sales out of this.

I think it'll be hard for Slash to outsell CD, even if Axl's album had disappointing sale numbers. Salsh is popular, alright, that's true, but people rather download it than buy it. Slash is Slash, he's big, but the brand Guns N' Roses is much bigger than him - cause the GN'R brand has Slash in itself, even though he left 12+ years ago. Slash has a chance to outsell CD though, but he'll need at least 2 very strong singles for the mainstream audience. I still don't know what audience he wanna reach - with Alice Cooper you can only get like some thousand rock fans, but with Fergie he has great hopes to succeed.
I'm not against Alice or anything, but we all know what the outcome can be. With Fergie or Robbie Williams (rumour) or Jack White (rumour) or Linda Perry (my dream, lol) he can surprise even his long-time fans.

I would actually argue that in the year 2009 because of Guitar Hero and such, the Slash brand is probably bigger than the Guns N' Roses brand.

Hell, I was in Toys R' Us the other day and saw a gigantic Slash action figure based on guitar hero.

Plus he has the added push of other names on the album with all the different singers.

Like Mikka alluded to, the various singers on the album could help sales of the album but I think they'll more likely help the sales of the individual songs.  Fans of Fergie are more likely to buy the SONG with Fergie on it instead of plunking down $12 for 11 other songs featuring other singers.  And that goes for all the singers.

Former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash has commenced recording his debut solo album with Josh Freese (A PERFECT CIRCLE, NINE INCH NAILS) on drums, Chris Chaney (JANE'S ADDICTION) on bass, and Eric Valentine (SMASH MOUTH, THIRD EYE BLIND, GOOD CHARLOTTE) in the producer's chair. Slash says, "Things are going fantastic in the studio, Josh Freese and Chris Chaney are one hell of a rhythm machine and the guitar sound is FAT! Fucking Awesome Tone! All is going perfect so far. We start recording vocals today and I'm really excited about working with this particular individual; it's going to be quite an event."

According to Slash, VELVET REVOLVER is still searching for a replacement for singer Scott Weiland, who was dismissed last April. He says, "There was a lot of talk about our announcing a new singer in March but it obviously didn't happen. We had somebody that we thought was a really good candidate, but it just wasn't meant to be. So, we're still looking. [As for possible VELVET REVOLVER live shows], of course VR is going to tour again, we just have to find the right person to front the band. We have a bunch of new material and we're all anxious to get going, but the key ingredient for a rock n' roll band such as VR is an amazing frontman, and we haven't found the right man for the job, yet."

Regarding which singers will guest on his upcoming CD, Slash previously said, "Unfortunately, I can't divulge that info yet, but you'll know soon enough. I will say, however, that they are fantastically talented songwriters who it's been an honor to work and write with, to say the least."
