After watching Quantum of Solace for the second time, I've decided that I like it a lot more than I did the first time around in the theater. Sure it's a letdown compared to Casino Royale, sure the theme song sucks, and sure the villain sucks...BUT it's still a pretty good movie overall. The key is NOT comparing it to Casino Royale.

The theme song certainly doesn't match the one Cornell wrote for Casino Royale.  And no Bond movie should be under two hours.  The villain was also a slight letdown like you said.

I felt the story in general was a little lacking and slightly sporadic at times.  But to me, it seemed like they were trying more for an action based James Bond movie than a story driven one.  Any great Bond film needs to have a good balance between the two.  I do really enjoy this movie, especially the opening scene.  It had a lot of potential to be a really great movie, but it was lacking in certain areas.  The overall feel of the movie was good I thought, and a step in the right direction.

Daniel Craig also makes an amazing Bond.  One of my favorites after seeing this movie.

He was already my second favorite Bond after Casino Royale. QoS cemented his spot. No one will ever top Connery though.

The guy who played the villain--Mathieu Amalric--was also in Munich and I thought he was very good as the sleazy, information dealer Louie.  Here he's not as believable.

Onto your other point, I think I'm probably guilty of expecting at least as good a film as Casino Royale.  However, if a portion of the film deals with Vesper's death and the fallout on Bond then I have no choice but to at least make a comparison to the film.  Most of my issues with the film were plot wise as the damn thing seemed to make no sense--even for a Bond film.  I don't think the action sequences were that good as well.   I'd attribute that to the director--Marc Forster as he makes primarily drama and comedy films.

He was already my second favorite Bond after Casino Royale. QoS cemented his spot. No one will ever top Connery though.

Connery had both an intellectual depth and a sense of humor.  The Moore era seemed to lack that extra depth as Roger Moore was extremely charming but I didn't get that extra existential angst--the whole killing people for a living thing and its affect on the character--that I got with Connery.  Nonetheless, I find a lot of his films enjoyable as popcorn films.  I do think the plots with Connery were a tad more believable though.  I haven't seen any of the Dalton films yet so I can't comment.  Now the Brosnan era, character-wise he had that coolness that Moore exuded but there was a little character insight--ala Connery--as well.  This is most evident in Goldeneye, especially in the scene where Alec(Sean Bean) confronts Bond in the cemetary.  Too bad they never followed up on this in the subsequent films.

Now, Craig has the entire existential angst thing down.  It's clear that he has a hard exterior which hides whatever internal pain and issues that come with the job.  I think he does this the expressions on his face.  The only thing that prevents him from coming close to matching Connery is that he lacks the coolness or suaveness and sense of humor that Brosnan and Moore did so well in their characters.  The only negative is that I think at times he can be too dour and unhappy.  Lucky for him, I think they can actually develop this part of his character in the next films.

That's a fair assessment, slashsfro. I should like to note that while I'm a lifelong Bond fan, I was not a fan of the Brosnan era at all. I don't care for Brosnan's interpretation of the character, and I really don't care for the Brosnan movies themselves (save "GoldenEye," of course). I wish more people had paid attention to Dalton's short tenure as the character, especially current fans of Craig's Bond. For me, the original series ends with "Licence to Kill." Brosnan's cycle is an awkward '90s relic. They're the most gimmicky and thus the most dated.

I like Brosnan as Bond, but I think two of his four movies sucked. And no, I'm not talking about Die Another Day. I actually enjoyed that one. But Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough were lousy IMHO.

I agree with both of you guys on this.  Bronson was pretty good, but his two middle movies were bad.

I really liked Dalton's take on Bond as well.  If I had to rank them, he would fall behind Craig and in front of Moore.

I got into the Bond franchise during the Brosnan-era and I remember watching a marathon of the old James Bond movies on TV around that time as well. I haven't watched them in awhile but I think the Connery-era movies are my favorites. I also dig the new movies with Daniel Craig, I can't wait for more.

Sorry for coming in to late on this thread but I'd like to share my thoughts on James Bond movies:

My favorite was Sean Connery. He seemed to have an appealing character in what a real spy would have. Life in danger. So he lives his life on the edge.
He drinks and smokes. He takes every opportunity to sleep with beautiful woman because he never knows if it will be his last time. Plus he had the tough attitude towards his opponents weather they were male or female.
Now the only other three bond actors I liked after Sean would be the one who played the role in At her Majesty's request. Than Timothy played the role good as well. And currently the new bond man Daniel Craig. He reminds me allot of Sean Connery.
The best Bond movies are really hard to pick because with all the movies from the beginning to now seemed to alternate in how the story line of the movie was written. In example Dr. No was a good one. But than From Russia with love kind of did a one step down. Than Gold finger came out and it was one step up. It seems to me all bond movies continued in this fashion. One would be fantastic and the follow-up alright.
As far as Bond-woman I'd have to say they all were very attractive one way or another. I surely wouldn't turn any of them down if I was James Bond that's for sure........:haha:

You seem to like a harder edged Bond, and I respect that. While I don't think a lot of fans would agree with your calling "From Russia with Love" a step down, I also don't think a lot of fans would agree with my calling "Goldfinger" perhaps the least interesting of the Connery Bonds. Anyway, thanks for contributing and welcome to the thread.
