Follow-up to 'No Line On The Horizon' on the way

U2 have revealed that they are planning to release another new album before 2009 is over.

The band described the album as a "companion" to new effort 'No Line On The Horizon', released today (March 2), and that it will be more meditative than their latest effort.

The band added that they would not be considering breaking from the traditional cycle of record releases in the style of Radiohead.

"My instinct is to stick with the record guys," guitarist The Edge told the New York Times. "They have to sell your records or sell the downloads, whatever it ends up being.

"To do that, first of all you've got to love and understand the music, and right now I'm not seeing any group that rivals the record labels on that front."

Frontman Bono added: "I'm interested in commerce. The excuse for bigness is that songs demand to be heard if they're any good. And without the kind of momentum of being in a big rock 'n roll band, you won't get your songs heard."

I'm gonna have to rereview the album. 16  Never did I expect it to grow on me this fast after my initial reaction. Songs I "missed" first time around are amazing. Cedars  of Lebanon, If I don't go Crazy....,  I found myself knowing these songs instantly this morning when I put the album on. I only listened once last night so I think it's crazy how the songs were already in me.

I don't think so. I think they scrapped the stuff they did with Rubin. Bono's been quoted as saying the new album will be a more meditative type album. Probably a mroe atmospheric album with no single type songs. Then again thats Bono saying thisso who knows.

Yeah, well Zooropa was supposed to be just an afterthought/experiment too, and it turned out all right. So, maybe Bono (the singer) is downplaying it a bit.

well it definitely seems to be a grower

first listen I thought it sounded a bit forced but its sounding more classic U2 the more I listen

The proof will be what I think in 6 months but the signs thus far are for a better than average, if not great U2 album and that is indeed a rather exciting prospect

Magnificent is amazing.  As well as Moment of Surrender.  I can't get those songs out of my head.  I was singing them all day at work and school today.

And they are releasing another album this year!  This is really what GNR should have done from the beginning.

It would appear that No Line on the Horizon is both #1 and #2 on the iTunes top sellers list.  The regular version holds the top spot with the deluxe version behind it.

It is so nice to see some amazing music topping this chart again.  It happens too infrequently.

Simply put no band gets the reaction from their fans that U2 does. Just watched the performance of If I don't Go Crazy.... on Letterman and there isn't a band that gets such a reaction from the studio audience. It's awesome. U2 has off nights like everyone else(not tonight though)but the connection between the crowd and the band is what sets their live shows apart from anything else I've ever seen.  David Letterman has been saying it all week. The energy in his studio audience is amazing.

I agree. The album grew on me huge today. At first it sounded forced to me as well. Now after only 2 dasy it sounds more like classic U2.  Even Unknown Caller which I hated I  think isn't that bad now. Too bad they ruin it though with that weird voical chant style delivery. FEZ-Being Born is weird but I like it today without even realizing I was listening to it.

That's the second time this has happened with this album Saikin. They were #1 and #2 back when the album was first available for preorder. Pretty awesome. Basically the hardcore fans pushed it to #1 on itunes a month ago and now the public pushed it to #1 again.
