Batman Forever was conceived and shot as a much different movie than what we eventually saw on the screen. And I'm aware Watchmen was in production before the release of The Dark Knight, I was referring to the hype and its attention it's been getting as well as push from the studio a movie like this never would have garnered if it weren't for the success of these recent "adult" comic book movies.

Batman Forever was conceived as a kids movie. The studio was feeling pressure from parental groups after the extremely dark and "should've been an R" Batman Returns. The influence of Batman: The Animated Series was being felt, and it's huge toy sales and marketability to kids. The irony is Batman: TAS was influenced largely by Burton's films, and yet was probably a contributing factor in the 'cartooney' move the Schumacher films became.

As for Nolan's Batman films, I love TDK, and think it's the best Batman film ever. But if I had a choice, i'd of kept Burton "on-board" forever. His look, feel, presentation, and just every aspect, exudes my image of Batman, even if they weren't accurate to the comics.

Even now I think Batman '89 & Returns are superior to Begins.

I consider BB and TDK to be on the same level. I'd put B89 a half-notch below and BR another full notch below that. Much of my love for B89 and BR is nostalgia. There's a lot of goofy shit in those movies and just the overall powerhouse direction that Nolan has compared to Burton (FAR better storyteller) would make most people laugh at Burton's movies if they didn't have a years-old attachment to them. They have great style, but the storytelling is seriously lacking compared to BB and TDK. But I saw B89 as a 3 year old and I've seen it around 1000 times. I'll always love it no matter how good someone else's version of the character may be. I have similar feelings for BR, though to a lesser extent. I feel the script for B89 was miles ahead of BR's. The best thing about BR is the atmosphere and music. Some of the script is just dreadful.

I'd take Forever & B&R ANY day of the week, before i'd even attempt to revist the dreadful Batman '66, which I also grew up with.
