Re: Diamond, Wonder, M.I.A. Added To Grammy Performers
I'm surprised she is performing. She's pregnant. Her due date is on the day of the Grammys.
I hope she plays a new song at the Grammys, although they'll probably force her to perform Paper Planes.
Cant wait to see U2 as well. I said last year that 2009 would be the year of M.I.A. and U2, and its great to see that starting to take shape.
I cant believe Santogold was shunned. That is a killer record.
M.I.A. to Perform at Grammys 9 Months Pregnant
The official Twitter for the Grammy Awards updated their performance roster early this morning with the likes of Grammy regulars John Mayer, Keith Urban, Stevie Wonder, and Neil Diamond. There was one big surprise on their list, however: M.I.A.
It has been previously reported that M.I.A. is due to give birth on February 8, the exact same day of the Grammys, but news that she is set to perform on the television broadcast that day as well is a bit strange. It is possible the posting from the Grammy Awards made an error and as Rolling Stone notes, “Tentative isn’t even the word to describe the very-pregnant M.I.A.’s planned performance.”
M.I.A. is nominated for Record of the Year for her song “Paper Planes.” If she does indeed perform, 9 months pregnant to the date, this year’s Grammy Awards is sizing up to be an interesting show. Not to mention Radiohead will be doing a rare live award show performance for the broadcast.

M.I.A. To Perform At Grammys — On Her Baby’s Due Date!
Published by Gil Kaufman on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 12:10 pm.
M.I.A. is pregnant and nominated for a pair of Grammys. Like, nine months pregnant and maybe ready to deliver her first child any day, and nominated for Record of the Year for “Paper Planes” and Best Rap Song for “Swagga Like Us.” So, what is she going to do on Sunday?
Stay at home with her feet kicked up, eating Chunky Monkey with some bone marrow drizzled on top? Watch the whole thing go down on TV with producing pal Diplo and her baby’s dad Ben Brewer with a celebratory glass of sparkling pomegranate juice on ice, in case she wins?
Nope, Maya Arulpragasam, who is also nominated for an Oscar for her contribution to the “Slumdog Millionaire” soundtrack, “O … Saya,” is not only going to the Grammys, she’s going to perform. Let me reiterate this: her due date is … Sunday.
“They say that you’re often late the first time, so I’m planning to go” to the show, the 31-year-old told USA Today. “We’ll see. People are trying to get me to relax and focus on the baby. It’s like being in parallel universes.” Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure she’ll be the first nine months pregnant singer to perform on the show, but don’t tell M.I.A. that being a mom is any excuse to shelve your swagga. “Having a baby is the most creative thing you can do,” she said. “It makes you re-learn the world through a child’s eyes.”
She plans on performing at the Oscars on February 22 as well. Dave Chappelle, get some kid-friendly material ready.
Re: Diamond, Wonder, M.I.A. Added To Grammy Performers
You bring up an interesting point. She had a major rant against american media over the song being censored in 2007 when she started performing it on TV and it was getting played on MTV.
That Letterman performance of the track is painfully awkward. You can tell it made her uncomfortable and rubbed her the wrong way.
There's no point in censoring it now. The song exploded, and it wasn't the censored version that people listen to. I cant imagine her agreeing to perform anything censored at this point in her career.
