This is bad. Some of these transitions are just awful.
If Chris played a big part in writing a lot of this music like he has said- it's time to retire. Or like James said, start writing for Rihanna from now on. I hear she's going to work on a new album soon. He could produce it.

'Climbing Up the Walls' isn't too shabby.
I'm still in shock by this. I never would have predicted this musical direction in a million years. What's next? Jim Nabors recording a thrash album? Somewhere, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepard, and Matt Cameron are laughing.
I don't even need to see the liner notes to feel Timbaland's influence. I'm not even sure exactly how many tracks he participated in, but it's clearly most of it and I think I even hear him doing backing vocals.

I've only listened to Scream and Part of Me, and while I do like the first one mentioned...
Is this the same guy who wrote Black Hole Sun and fronted Soundgarden?

The songs are there. No doubt about it, this guy still has skills in the songwriting department. He's always been amazing in that department, and when you throw Shepard into the same room with him, masterpieces come to fruition.
My issues with this isn't necessarily the quality as I would easily listen to this material on a Rihanna or Pussycat Dolls cd, its just the massive change in direction throws you for a loop.
From Overfloater to Cochise to Ground Zero is just too much to bare.

I must say, on my system in the car, it sounds really good. But as James said, its such a drastic change in direction, its a big shock to my ears. If I want something with rap influences, I'll throw on some DMX.
However, this cd is easily more accessible / better than his last solo album. I'll be picking it up when its released.

Timbaland helped write every song, and provided backup vox for at least 2 songs. Justin Timberlake is on one, and then some other guy that I have never heard of does backup vox for all songs.
Some of this songwriting is just plain awful, on Cornell's side.

Anything is better than his last solo album. I consider Carry On to be the worst album this decade, and quite a few people felt the same. Maybe he felt his musical career slipping away and decided to go in this bold direction.
Whether or not his rock oriented base likes this material or not, this album is loaded with potential hits and will sell. What's worrying about this is he will likely grab a new fan base with this and will have to start catering to them and it'll permanently alter his career. Maybe that's what he wants.
I wish he would have did a Soundgarden reunion before charting this course. This album may have shut the door permanently on that chapter. Maybe his ex band mates aren't laughing after all.

Not sure if I would proclaim it 'awful' generally speaking, but its definitely a non conventional yet safe direction for him to go. He is so talented song writing wise that he can jump on any trend and start writing hits.
If you mean in comparison to his brilliant resume, then yes it is awful.

I listened to a few tracks. Not my cup of tea. And I personally think it isn't going to be played that much on radio. He is what 40 something? I don't see major pop stations playing this. And hopefully rock radio won't touch it. Soundgarden deserves a relaunch before he goes and does this bullshit. I would rather listen to the last Audioslave's album 10 times in a row than listen to this dude try and look for mainstream appeal.

Oh yes James, I meant in comparison to the rest of his resume. I guess I should have said- for Cornell, some of this song writing is just awful.
And Timbaland's contributions sound like just about everything else the man does.
After this album, I think the possibility of a Soundgarden reunion just got a lot slimmer. It's going to be interesting at the end of Cornell's career to see what his legacy turns out to be.
And this album isn't 'trying something new,' it's following what everyone else is doing. I'd love to go back in time and play this to the man who sang on Superunknown. Or maybe not... we might not have got Down on the Upside or Euphoria Morning or any Audioslave.
