Re: The Top 11 Most Depressing Songs of All Time
Pretty good list. I never heard 2 or 3 of those songs. I just heard Johnny Cash's Hurt on the radio at lunch & the dj mentioned about getting choked up during it.
Something off Counting Crows first album should be in Top 20, Raining in Baltimore or Sullivan Street.

untitled 1 (a.k.a. Vaka) - Sigur Ros is an awesome song and awesome video.
I'm surprised The Cure didn't get a mention. Then again even their sadest songs come of as more beautiful than depressing.
I don't like Leonard Cohen's version of Hallelujuh. I thought Jeff Buckley's cover was better but my favorite version of it is this guy's. ortoPilot:
I also love the song About Today by The National. Some might find it despressing but I think it's just awesome.
Oh and anyone who doesn't know the Sigur Ros song or the video check it out

I'll check the songs of the list I haven't heard, although I'd have a very different list. Yesterday would be that depressing? Even the Beatles had darker songs.

Pretty good list. Taps should always been on top. Cash's Hurt is also like a eulogy.
GNR's Estranged could've probably made it too. Like Cash's Hurt, it seems like a song you play before you commit suicide. Very atmospheric in a hopeless sort of way.

With the video I agree with Cash's version of 'Hurt'. However, purely audio, in the context of TDS, NIN's is much more effective. At least this writer acknowledges that it's a NIN song. I hate when people give Cash a writing credit for it.
In my opinion it's hard to get more depressingly beautiful than when Alice in Chains slowed down or went acoustic. But none of their big hits were like that, so it's understandable that they wouldn't be on this list.

I think AIC's Nutshell from MTV Unplugged could have easily made number 3 on that list. That song is so haunting, especially when it comes down to watching Layne sing that. There are so many AIC songs to pick from but in my mind, that one really stands out.
