Tyler I would agree that the drumming is a major part of Soundgarden's better music - it pulls and pushes as oppose to simply driving. AIC sometimes got a similar thing to happen but only on the acoustic stuff, Jar of Flies particularly. Of course Dave Grohl is great, but he's a great strictly driving rock drummer. Cameron adds another dimension instead of another layer to Soundgarden's music.
I've said for a long time that the grunge era as a whole has the best drummers out there. There are exceptions obviously (and jazz drummers come to mind) but most of those guys are really underrated.
Ben Shepard was not in the band on these albums, and you'll notice his absence immediately.
It's fantastic when a bass player has that kind of impact on a band, and can do it without taking over the music (Claypool), but Shepard's one of those guys who can do it.

Shepard deserves just as much credit as Cornell for the Badmotorfinger-Down on the Upside era of the band. That has to be one of the greatest three album runs in music history, Its no coincidence they started to release masterpieces as soon as he joined the band.
They actually knew Shepard early in their career but failed to pull the trigger. Almost brought him on board for the Louder than Love tour, but chose some guy who already knew all the previous songs. Luckily for music fans, the band tired of that guy's shit quickly and got rid of him.
Louder than Love is their best album in the pre-Shepard era, and I cant even imagine how much better it would have been had he been involved.
You Shepard and Cameron fans MUST check out their Wellwater Conspiracy project. Shepard only appears on their first album Declaration of Conformity. and its shocking that the record languished in obscurity. Its possibly the best album from 1997.
Shepard does all the vocals on that album. When you hear it and wonder why the bass isn't more prominent, its because Shepard isn't playing the bass. Its McBain.
A killer record. Its a bit hard to find, so if you guys are interested in hearing it, I'll upload it sometime this week.

Never really thought about it, but yeah the bass plays a huge role. Fell On Black Days might be my favorite tune, mostly because of the killer bass.
Still, what in gods name happened to Cornell? Too much coke? He was vicious back in the day, one of the top vocalists of the 90s, and now he seems to be one step away from performing at weddings on Love Boat. Baffles me what happens to some people when they get older. Scary stuff.

Superunknown is probably the best album to come out in the 90's. Still sounds as good today as when I first heard it. But I can't believe that Black Hole Sun is what most people know the band for, it's probably the worst song on the album!
Glad I got to see the band live before they split, but I'd always welcome a reunion.

Chris Cornell is completely sober now isn't he? I think I've read interviews were Chris said he was out of it most of the time during his Soundgarden days.

A friend of mine knows a tour manager that was at the same gig as him not long ago (year, maybe two) and he was constantly going back for coke in between songs.
Could be bull, but I've learned to seldom trust rockstars themselves when they claim to finally be clean.
