Re: Who should be GNR's next lead guitarist? (If needed)
I don't know about that Saikin. From a musical standpoint, one could argue it was an improvement. From an image standpoint, it was a disaster. Not just bad, disaster. The 2002 (or whatever year it was) VMAs and subsequent "tour" ended this version of GnR. While a couple people here got interested as a result, the rest of the world tuned out. I know all the BH fans like to say image doesn't matter, but you're wrong. Image matters more than the music sadly.
Very intelligent and realistic point. Karma.

Without Bucket, this album would have been a monumental clusterfuck of biblical proportions. Love him or hate him, that's a fact. Nothing worked until he took a stab at the tracks. Even people who sit around calling him a freak all day will admit that the highlights of the record are either his solos or a song he has a writing credit on.
Axl is still leaving the door open for his return. That tells you all you need to know about his importance on the CD sessions.

I'd have to agree for the most part. I love what Buckethead brought musically and I actually dig his look. But the majority of people saw Bucket onstage and it just didn't sit well. Maybe he could've gained more acceptance if he stuck around awhile but I guess we'll never know. GNR was a mess image-wise back then though. They were going in all different directions with Bucket, Robin's goth look, and Axl's hip hop/athletic gear look. Looked like 3 different bands onstage at all times.

You know... wow... i've never thought of it that way.
Could you imagine CD - without Bucket? Or even Chris Pitman?
Both of them brought something very unique and artistically great to GN'R, and Bucket really gave the guitars something special.
CD without Bucket's writing and actual musical performing on the album... frankly... would suck. Axl's vocals & lyrics, even in their best form, could NOT and I repeat could NOT save an album, full of guitar work by Axl, Robin Finck & Paul Tobias.
The album is what it is, because of Bucket.
Amazing how such a freak of an artist, who was only around for a few years, was the main one that saved this album from oblivion.

I'd say Robin Finck was the bigger offender followed by Axl. The first time I saw the 2002 VMA I thought Finck was a woman! Most people associate Axl with the bandana and to be honest everybody remembers Axl as a skinny guy. Clearly, he was wearing the jerseys to hide his girth. I've never really gotten the Bucket hate at least appearance wise. GNR fans used to cheer on a guy who wore a top hat. So the guy wore a different hat big deal.
Axl is still leaving the door open for his return. That tells you all you need to know about his importance on the CD sessions.
Didn't someone here post once that there is bad blood between the two? I'd say its unlikely that Bucket will return. Axl pretty much gave him a blank check the last time and he said no.
Re: Who should be GNR's next lead guitarist? (If needed)
I've never heard there was bad blood between Axl & Bucket. Now Robin & Bucket i've heard.
I do believe that Bucket got pissed at Axl, because Axl had to "talk to him" about it being a bit weird needing porn and to masturbate (in studio) to find inspiration to write/record. But I don't think it carried from that one event. Bucket felt his work was finished by 2004, and refused to add anything else. Ultimatum - "Axl release the album" / Axl - "no" / Bucket - "bye".
Re: Who should be GNR's next lead guitarist? (If needed)
Bh was totally not a worse case senario...in contrast it was a step in the right direction. The original GNR was popular because of everyone, but a large part of things was Axl's voice and Slash's guitar. The loss of slash left a hole in the guitar department, the addition of bucket brought in a guitarist that was clearly at virtuoso level and thus a guitarist that could be respected by guitarist type fans.
While I agree that immage is everything these days, BH's image serves to make him more memorable to a non-guitariast than the other guitar masters such as Gilbert. So i think people see him as "that freak with the deadly guitar skills"...sure he cops a lot for it...but at the end of the day he can back it up in playing. I'll grant it wouldn't have helped but I think more of an issue for the 2002 line up was Axl's change to the urban gangster look, and Robin's variation on the solos and general apperance. For whatever reason circa 2002 Axl's voice appeared to have different qualities too, and I don't think that would have helped people dig it as GNR. You have a new band, with a new style voice, new style of guitar parts, and a host of different unexplained appearances all at once. Tough for the mass market to handle.
You guys have a huge problem if you still think that GNR as a band exists....
The title of the thread in itself is moronic.

one of the guys over at bucket's forum, who apparently knows bucket, has stated that axl said mean things to bucket during the departure that bucket may never forgive him for.

Come on now, there's been no stories, evidence, rumors that Bucket masturbated.

That's interesting. I'm over there all the time and have never seen this. What's your username over there?

This is the most likely reason, right here.
