Re: Who should be GNR's next lead guitarist? (If needed)
You guys figure Axl's ego would allow him to ever go with an unheard of guy. That'd be the best approach in my oinion. Bring a guy in who has no expectaions on him whatsoever. I'm sure Axl could hold auditions and get a shitload of deadly guitar players to show up that nobody has ever heard of.

GNRBABY wrote:I can confirm that when I mention the new GNR album to people, they say, "Is Slash back in the band?" or "Oh, they finally got back together?". They have no clue about anything that has happened since let's say 1998. They don't even know about the VMA's or anything. Some people have been enjoying the album for like 20+ mins before they ask me about the members. Once they find out there is no Slash, they seem to put up a wall. Though, a few people said "Well, it sounds cool though, can you burn me a copy?" or some ask "can you buy this yet" or "where did you find this?"
That's really interesting considering how many people on Gn'R boards vehemently claimed that everybody going to a Gn'R show from 2002-2006 new that it wasn't the original band. Seems that isn't the case as many of us have been saying all along. I'd really like to know what the true numbers were in 2006 regarding people who attended shows under teh impression thsi mock up was actually Guns N' Roses. It seems that while they were touring a common perception among alot of fans was the general public knew what was going on with the band but now that the album is out suddenly alot of people are starting to say the general public doesn't know it's not the original band. It all just seems weird to me.
I think a lot of people did know that the band was different in 2006 to some degree. I just think that it's all been quite FORGETTABLE for most casual fans. I had to remind some of my friends that I went to see them 6 times in 2006. One guy I had offered a ticket to in 2006 and he turned me down. I had to remind that guy too - he had simply forgotten that I even offered him a ticket just 2.5 years ago! (10/2006)
I think younger people who surf the net or who are "into music" kinda have an idea. Those 25+ are just clueless to anything past TSI. It's funny how many 25+ bring up TSI too - it's crazy

Well I know in 2006 when I was talking about the NA shows, everyone busted my balls about BUCKETHEAD. And then I let them know he was no longer in the band. Many people at the Tampa show, I informed them that Bucket was no longer in the band, as they were expecting him.
Then in 2008, when CD came out, all of the bullshit I got was about Bucket being in GN'R, and then I once again informed them - he's been out since 2004, but his material was on the album.
SO
Bono is right imo, just per my experience. Many people became informed of new Guns with that 2002 VMA performance, whether by watching on MTV or MTV2, or simply the hundreds of MILLIONS of people who found out on the internet, through articles and videos.
I feel safe to say, almost everyone KNOWS that it's a different band.
Thus the reason the half-full arenas, and lackluster album sales. If they don't know it's a different band... than it's a scarier thought for Guns fans... if that's the case, it just goes to show how truely irrelevant Guns are in 2008, and that they did die in 1993.

the "revolving door" has gone unnoticed to most of the world. all they know or will notice if gnr tours is there is no slash. they have no idea how many people have come and gone and don't care. i agree a final lineup needs to be established for touring and if future albums/tours are on the way they need to find that lineup right now, make it good (marketable and talented), and stick with it after taking the plunge.
Anyone who bought the album and read the liner notes would have a clue as to how many players have passed through the band no? It's funny how people always say the world is smart enough to know this isn't the original Guns N' Roses yet they're not smart enough to know the band has opperated as a revolving door? Please. People saw the band on the MTV awards with Buckethead. how many of those people who saw them live in 2006 thought to themselves "Gee where is the guy with the bucket on his head?" I bet alot. Unless a person still thinks Slash is in the band they know this is Axl and a revolving door of musicians.
but the people you are talking about there, who know who's on the album, are the ones that bought the album. what i am saying is that, to the casual fans, the revolving door was created when slash left and any interest in the band since then has been predominately maintained by the big kahuna, axl.
sure you have your bucket fans, and your finck fans, and your bumble fans but, again, these people bought the album.
the "revolving door" did the extent of it's damage in the nineties.
right now, if gnr is to hire a new guitar player i would rather see a brilliant unknown player than a sloppy seconds guitar hero because i want to hear great music more than i want to see increased interest in the band. if the music is good enough on the second album and he is a major contributor he could become a draw but, as i said in my last post, it then becomes important for the lineup to maintain stability (if they are hoping to build on the success of cd).
if that is the case, they definitely need someone at lead guitar that can grab people's attention. ideally someone that is already well known that could bring fans and hype with him.
